Hello tigers! I don't post much on these forums, but I'm a regular at #tigirc. I've been working on this Skyroads clone for about two years now. It's called Tasty Static, and it's a game where you go really fast and jump a lot. You'll probably get really annoyed along the way too.

Versions for Windows XP and OS X are out, and a Linux port is close in tow. There is also a Windows-only level editor. It's all available at http://www.tastystatic.com

The trailer is great. Tasty static had a nice aesthetic before, but you managed to make it look more...well, tasty. Well, hello there!

Can't try it yet, so I can't comment on the gameplay, but I'm looking forward to the Mac / Linux builds. Keep up the good work!

Can't download it right now (stupid satellite internet and it's bandwith limits) but it looks cool. Reminds me of Skyroads.

Moving left and right seems to be quite slow.  It's actually pretty distracting.  I'm not entirely sure if this is intended or not.  Concerned

Having said that, I certainly intend to keep playing it.  This must say something good about the project.  I'm curious to keep playing til the end! Beer!

This is pretty slick, and some parts are quite fun. I particularly like the 'Sidewinder' levels and the first jumping levels with yellow floors. In terms of visual polish, this is one of the slickest 3d games I've seen come out of the community in a long time. The menus are pretty nice as well.

How exactly does the strafing / turning work? It seems like it's very slightly accelerational, but maxes out so quickly it's almost linear. It also seems like the turning rate is lower at lower speeds, but I'm not sure quite what the relationship is. At what speed is the turn the tightest?

At times I had some trouble with not being able to see the track ahead (especially in the 'freefall' levels, where the camera shifts quite frequently). It's also somewhat difficult for me to gauge depth sometimes.

I'm not quite sure what I think of the style of memorization involved. Sometimes it's really fun, but other times it feels random and I don't know what I'm doing wrong when I die (particularly when there's a lot of hidden information or guess and check involved). I strongly suspect I'll have more fun with it as I get used to the tracks, though.

Thanks a lot for making this- I hope I don't sound too negative. I really appreciate all the hard work you've obviously put into this.

Yeah, strafing is supposed to be unbearably slow when you aren't moving and then increase linearly with your speed. Similarly, jumping is supposed to feel as stiff as it does.
Sorry about the difficulty - towards the end of the game's development cycle I had NO idea how to judge a level's difficulty, so the learning curve for the game is (unfortunately) pretty steep.
Thanks for the comments, they weren't negative at all  Smiley

fantastic!
easily the best skyroads clone that i have played yet.
polished overall presentation: great looking menu, fine vector graphics and a colorful levels...
accompanied by smooth controls and a matching soundtrack.
very good work.

but oh well the 2nd elements level took me 23 tries...
fortunately the game has the special "just one more try" feeling...
when i finsihed that level i thought: afterall it wasnt that hard :-D

Some kind of indicator for completed tracks would be nice.

I'm now 'stuck' on Freefall 2.

I really need to change the jump key from spacebar to something different.  Most keyboards (my keyboard) cannot push multiple arrow keys and space at the same time.  So up + left + spacebar means I'm either not moving left or not jumping.

Yes, actually I had the same problem. I had to map the keys to a gamepad to play.

I encountered the same difficulties.

I'm eagerly awaiting the Linux version.

Totally awesome AND there's a mac version! I am very happy right now.

I'm curious to try this game with a gamepad... I will probably just go install USB Overdrive (it's like joy2key for mac), but are you considering adding SDL joystick support?
