I probably don't have anything important to do this weekend so I'm thinking of joining. I've never participated in one of these rapid-development competitions and I would like to see what it's like.

Since I'm so inexperienced I probably won't finish in time but it would be interesting to try.

Any protips for a beginner?

If anyone willing to join needs some inspiration, check out Ragnarok Battle. Its the best indie action rpg I have ever played, partly because there isn't a lot of competition and partly because its just brilliant. Its weird how little sidescrolling rpgs are being made, seems to me they are just a small leap away from the usual metrovanias.

Hopefully some nice games will come out to make the idea more popular.
