Note: Odds and ends may not be all that useful.

For next couple of weeks I'm going to post some odds and ends that will hopefully be of use to at least somebody.

First, some emoticons:

And a starmap background! Should be helpful to people who want to make a shmup:

Hey look, arrows! And HUD tiles!

Meadow backdrop:

And here it is in (three) living color(s).

Suns and moons and Jack-o-lanterns, oh my!

In color:

Stars and turkeys and more:

In color:

Acorns and turtles and more!

GUI widgets!

Also I made some static explosions/effects:

Hey look, fluffy clouds! (And a witch!)

And here's some people and a bat!

In color:

Finally, a version of that witch in color:

Having a starmap with a bunch of random star animations would be really nice. Shooting stars, supernovas, little travelling UFOs in the background, and so on. Maybe also different constellations that could be overlayed, and set to twinkle.

Also: more emotion/thought bubbles!

New stuff! I made a backdrop:

Use it for backgrounds in your adventure game, rpg battles, whatever. I'll see what I can do about coloring it.

Here comes the sun, doo-de-doo-doo....

And here comes the moon, the moon, the moon, the moo-oo-oon. Mind the jack-o-lantern.

This stuff is intended to be used with the backdrop posted earlier, but you're welcome to use it for whatever you want. And like the backdrop, I'll see what I can do about coloring it.

Yeah, what's the problem? If you're having trouble with the arrows I could always split them up for you.

Why are you using MS Paint? Is this intentional?

Try zooming in and doing it pixel by pixel. Don't rely on the rather crappy MS Paint tools to do the work for you. Look up some tutorials on "pixel art" if you are confused.

Also try doing things within a certain size like 32 by 32, 64 by 64, etc. This will not only make it easy for your assets to actually be usable in a game, but also allow you to draw more efficiently without any wasted pixels.

Well, actually, I'm using Paint.net for most of this stuff. And I'm really new to pixel art, so I'd rather stick to doing simple things that don't require sketching it out pixel by pixel.

That said, I will try to keep the sizes within the powers of two from now on.

Moving on...

HUD tiles. They're inspired by the ones in the GB Dragon Quests. There's two pixels of padding on each side.

There's more to life than pixel art. -.- And there's quite a lot of people doing the traditional "indie pixel" look already.

I rather like Healy's style. It puts me in the mind of a kid's drawings! Or maybe a coloring book (especially with the white background). No pretension, no stress, they're just fun. Also makes me think of the recent Where the Wild Things Are movie, which is all a-okay in my (coloring) book. Possibly also

Hey, no need to get huffy in my defense!  Shrug Of course I'll mostly be focusing on hand-drawn art, but I'll also be doing some more pixel stuff, mostly icons and HUD tiles and things that tend to get lost in the shuffle of tilesets and sprites. And if they inspire better versions down the road, so much the better!

These won't be of much use unless you get rid of the antialiasing on the outside edges of the sprites.

maybe you could break the background into it's constituent parts too, so someone could compose them however they needed. If colored (brightly) it would totally have a Fantasy Zone vibe for a Shmup or something.
