Hello, TIGsource! It's Alan Gordon, the guy who made Zombie City Tactics and Vertical Challenge and stuff. I am here to talk about the SUPER GAME BAKEDOWN.
This will be the third official year that I have organized this event. It was touched on briefly here after it ended last year; the idea is that people start coding a game at the beginning of January, then finishes the game by the end of January. Kind of a NaNoWriMo for game developers.
There are very few limitations - all game making methods are allowed, from C++ to RPG Maker. The extent of what makes a complete "game" is entirely int he judgement of the participant. The only real rules are not to start coding, drawing, or making any resources for your game before midnight, January 1st. Planning is A-OK, though.
It starts in ten days, which is a little frighteningly soon, but I was wondering if 1) anyone here would be keen on participating, and 2) if it could get a TIGsource mention before it starts. We have a website in the works, but I don't know if it will be up in time...
So far, it's just me and a few people from over on Insert Credit participating. Anyone else interested?

Help is allowed!
On the other hand, I generally don't recommend working in organized teams, as it can slow the process down. I mean, you CAN, but I susupect it would be harder.

Slows the process down? What? Anyway, it's a bit of an odd concept; it seems like the novel writing thing chose a month because that is a short time to make a novel, but it's relatively a long time to make a game, at least for a competition. I mean, MinorHack is an hour long, Ludum Dare is 48 hours, Speedhack is 72, Text the Halls is two weeks ... so why pick a month? Also, is there a website?

To answer your questions in the order you asked them: 1: Groups may not slow you down! I don't know. It's my hunch based on personal experience. 2: I chose a month because it's enough time to make a decent product that doesn't feel too rushed. 48 hours is great for a crazy theme competition, but this is more slow-paced, emphasizing quality over quantity. Or something. 3: There WILL be a website, but there is not one yet!

I think you should repost the competition and rules in the Competitions sub-forum, which is where you should have started in the first place. There, the contest should get more appropriate attention.

It's February! That means that it's no longer January and the competition is over. This year I entered! My game is right here: My Love is Across the GapOther games entered in the bakedown include: Robot World Arena by Dessgeega Bark, Bark, Bark to Save the Earth by skelethulu Garmada by luvcraft Crosstown by luvcraft Mike the Cat's Legal Defense Fund by Take It Sleazy Gravity Has Almost Disappeared by L (A Quest for Zelda Classic. Download Zelda Classic here) Play some of them and post impressions! I'm not sure there's been a winner yet, or even that the competition creators have checked in on the games created for it, but there's some good stuff in here, so I hope everyone takes a look! EDIT- OH CRAP! I just saw that I'm not supposed to advertise my own game. Please don't ban me, but feel free to delete this post if you'd like. -Wes

Wow completely passed me by this one.
Don't worry about the advertising thing it's mostly there for people who are selling their games I think... besides you link to a bunch of other games which is both cool and awesome.

I'm glad that the Bakedown was a success this year! Too bad that you didn't promote it at all other than within SB itself.

I'm pretty disappointed about the relative lack of promotion as well. I assumed that making a good game and releasing it for free would generate automatic interest, but I feel like so few people are taking the time to try it out.
I guess this mirror's my own experience since I rarely play the random free games I stumble across on the internet, but I assumed there was this huge subculture of people who try every little free game they can get their hands on. Guess I need to pimp harder! I'll probably make a YouTube video.
