Dumping on the bandwagon in 3-- 2-- 1--. The ones marked with an asterisk are WIP. Got wood? (five flavors, 64 x 64 px sprites)* Snowflakes (16 x 16 px sprites) They are there, believe me. And they are not unique, oh no. Tilesets (32 x 32 px sprites)Tilesets (16 x 16 px sprites)I guess a little explanation is in line for these tilesets. The technique was inspired by Bob le Moche's game Lost in Eldritch and he's been kind enough to discuss it in details.
The biggest advantage of this technique is that the sprites represent junctions of 4 adjacent tiles rather than representing individual tiles, therefore you don't have to worry about the continuity of the graphics and more importantly you don't have to create additional graphics for places where one "material" is blending into another.
This means that the graphics and the logics are separate. For an n * m map, your graphics will be (n-1) * (m-1). Different tilesets have different id's which also identifies the order they're drawn over each other.
The allocation of the tiles follows the order of the 4 adjacent logical tiles being analyzed. This could be arbitrary - in my case it's top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right, which is handy, as you can then create a bitmask of your matches, associating the tiles with the 0th - 3rd powers of two.
One of the most obvious disadvantages is that this approach makes it difficult to make slopes.Screens and mockups:Meet the Parallacs (...in a dark forest).

Delicious trees!! Hope you're planning to make something for them to stand on... and maybe some things to lurk in them!

Very good! Reminds me of later SNES games. Only problem I have is that the second "flavor" is a little too similar to the first.

I hear ya. I'll see if I can separate those two flavors a bit better.

Hello this is Pencerkoff
If you had the right color scheme, I bet you could make some snow-covered trees really fast.

The trees are quite magical and inspiring, and the ground is.. self-similar. I'd like to see a ground tile to match the "dark" trees, and one to match the "luminescent" trees. :D

Thanks.=) The trees are quite magical and inspiring, and the ground is.. self-similar. Glad you like it! What do you mean 'self-similar'? I'd like to see a ground tile to match the "dark" trees, and one to match the "luminescent" trees. :D
That should not be a problem.

The tiles are nice - I gotta remember that tile15 system for possible future usage (or even part 2!) seems pretty handy!
Maybe Ipsquiggle means they look a bit regular compared to the twisted organic shapes of the trees? If so, I'd have to agree. No idea what you could do though.
(Pedant point: Self-similar is kind of the opposite ...it means fractal)

added and and not the real deal, but maybe probably sufficiently similar to the corresponding tree variants. Sorry, no snowy variant for the inverted tileset, it looks horribul. The tiles are nice - I gotta remember that tile15 system for possible future usage (or even part 2!) seems pretty handy!
It does, doesn't it? I'm trying to find an easy way to tackle slopes with it, then it'd be the bomb. Maybe Ipsquiggle means they look a bit regular compared to the twisted organic shapes of the trees? If so, I'd have to agree. No idea what you could do though.

That's the confusion that I had. Yeah, these are still too well behaved, un-rad tiles. I try to splash out something more delicious tomorrow.

thanks.=) I'll do something more than varying that palette before it stops being cool; promise. But before that, I gotta post this; I'm in love: Welcome to the parallax scrolled, motion blurred, particle sprinkled LSD forest!
