I think the worst gamer stereotype that has some grounding in reality is the whole "no interests outside of gaming" thing. I know a few people who have trouble with normal, everyday conversations simply because gaming is the only thing they have anything to say about. I always feel a bit sad when I see that.

1.Why do you play indie games?
I like games. Indie games tend to have the specific types of games I like, and also are often free.
2.Why would you purchase an indie game over a mainstream game?
I don't usually purchase Indie games. I don't purchase mainstream games much either, though. So the same criteria apply to both: Is it fun?
3.How do you view people who only play mainstream games?
I don't really draw a distinction between those who play indie games and those who play mainstream games. They're all gamers.
4.How do you think society perceives gamers in general?
I have honestly no clue, though I suspect it's not in an entirely good light. Like most subcultures.

1.Why do you play indie games? I think they have a special charm that most mainstream games nowadays lack. Indies games remind me of the great nes~snes era, when games were made by people with love for games and not only for money.
2.Why would you purchase an indie game over a mainstream game? Most of them are free and really enjoyable. There's some originality here and there so. Also, the reasons I said in 1.
3.How do you view people who only play mainstream games? They don't know what they are missing. Indies also have a lot of GREAT games that in a lot of cases are way better than the mainstream ones. Maybe they think indie games lack quality or whatever, mostly because there are a lot of "simple" or "artgames" in the indie scene. But the indie scene is fun and has a great variety of games, different from the mainstream that nowadays is almost "FPS" or some "Anime RPG game full of cliche".
4.How do you think society perceives gamers in general? Weird nerds that do nothing but stare at virtual porn and play this silly, kiddy games.

1.Why do you play indie games?I like mainstream games but most of them don't satisfy me in terms of style, content, ambiance, or intent. Indie games tend to respect their player's intelligence more. 2.Why would you purchase an indie game over a mainstream game?Same as #1 3.How do you view people who only play mainstream games?I see them as lacking curiosity and/or sophistication. 4.How do you think society perceives gamers in general? As the retards most of them are, at least in terms of taste.

1.Why do you play indie games?
I don't really look at my game purchases as "indy" or not. I just play video games.
2.Why would you purchase an indie game over a mainstream game?
Because I thought it looked and it seemed more like my style of game.
3.How do you view people who only play mainstream games?
They're okay. I have no problem with them.
4.How do you think society perceives gamers in general?
People think of video games like they do board games - kind of something FUN to do to waste some time.
More and more people, however, are getting the message that games are ART.
Hope that helps!

1.Why do you play indie games? To escape the soul crushing boredom of my every day life.
2.Why would you purchase an indie game over a mainstream game? Higher enjoyment to dollar spent ratio.
3.How do you view people who only play mainstream games? I think they have different tastes than me. It is similar to the view a football fan takes of a baseball fan.
4.How do you think society perceives gamers in general? As the generation that grew up on games takes over for the generation before, who is and is not a gamer will be a non issue. It will just be assumed that every one is a gamer to some degree, like every one is a television watcher to some degree. People will still shake their heads when they hear of gamers who go on 36 hour gaming binges and pass out due to dehydration, but I hope this will be recognized as the exception rather than the rule.

1.Why do you play indie games? Well, why do people play games? It's fun.
2.Why would you purchase an indie game over a mainstream game? If it seemed more interesting. Mostly because of a fresh approach to game mechanics, it's always interesting to play something different than most of the games you've seen. (this can be true for a mainstream game too; I love scribblenauts because it's never been done before)
3.How do you view people who only play mainstream games? As I see everyone else; people. Actually, it's quite interesting to speak about the indie vs mainstream -stuff with them.
4.How do you think society perceives gamers in general? In quite a good way, as I see it.

board games are in general much better designed than videogames, and are far more of a social activity, which is good. also, they are ART just as much as videogames are.

Just like arcade games. Pity that culture has gone from most of our countries though.
