Mushihimesama Futari is region-free on Xbox 360.  I don't know a whole lot about bullet hell games, but I really like this one. Smiley

The one I really want to play is Death Smiles, though.  I like the horror aesthetic.

La Soeur De Barrage! It's freeware, mouse-based, and awesome.

It's a little bit foreign, but it's a lot of cool.

I suggest starting with Imperishable Night and Perfect Cherry Blossom.

Touhou is very much overrated. Also, of course, it is hard to obtain, unless you do so illegally. Personally, I'd recommend Ikaruga if you have a console you can play it on, or perhaps Clean Asia, which is free; if you do feel the need to play a TouHou game and bow to the hype at least get Shoot the Bullet since it's the only original game Zun has ever made.

Touhou is very much overrated.

How so? I think you're just confusing "liking the franchise in general" to "liking the games". There's tons of Touhou fans out there who has probably never played the games because they don't like bullet hells, but the games are very solid bullet hell games for those into the genre.

So Touhou is the Kingdom Hearts of shmups, essentially?

Also, I still haven't played it even though I'm a big shmup fan. What does that say about me?

I think you could compare Touhou to Final Fantasy. Both are the best representatives of each genre. Also, Touhou has thousands of variations made by fans (most not sucking, tho). The official series has 14 games IIRC

I would tend to agree that Touhou games are overrated by their fans, but I would also tend to agree that they're pretty fine games, on the whole. The Final Fantasy comparison isn't a bad one at all, particularly if you look at FFVII; it's a very good JRPG, but isn't the Best Game In The History Of All Games that some of its fans will claim.

It seems to me that they offer a distinctly different kind of experience to some other bullet-hell games, though. Touhou games are (at least partly, if not predominantly) about spectacle, but in the same way as Saving Private Ryan and Jurassic Park (or recent Final Fantasy games!)are about spectacle...  it doesn't make either of those bad movies, and it doesn't make the Touhou games bad bullet-hell shooters.

I'd agree that Perfect Cherry Blossom is a good introduction to the series (I'd avoid Imperishable Night because of that weird time-related mechanic that makes no sense to the beginner) and that Shoot the Bullet is a great game that's quite useful for skill-building as well as just being-fun.

(And man, that rack of animated smileys up there doesn't half make a remote desktop connection grind to a halt...)

The Kingdom Hearts comparison was more a reference to "fans" who haven't even played the game. There's plenty of those for KH too.

Well, there's not many Touhou games made by fans, the fan content mainly deals with fanart and doujins (mostly porn). There are the Touhou fighting games made by Tasogare Frontier though, which are "official spin-offs", seeing as ZUN has written the story for them.

In my case I've played SWR (Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, the second fighting game) more than any of the main games, because it's just so darned fun. Bullet hell fighting game!

If your searching for bullet-madness Diadra Empty will do well. Watch that

Blue Wish Resurection is an excellent starter bullet-hell (along with Dodonpachi obviously), it's free and pretty good. Download

RefleX, not really a bullet hell but that shmup really want you to do errors, it push you to do stupid movement really easily cause of the shield that make you feel invincible at first. And the OST is awesome.

And my favorite, Hellsinker, the well named, really really hard at first, but there's A LOT of ways to get past the levels and the bosses, different characters with many different powers, and the ost is awesome too.
