THANKS to TIGSOURCE for hosting this competition! I would have NEVER thought about making a overly pixelated 2D platformer if it had not been for this event. For my first-ever platformer, I humbly suggest it isn't too shabby!
THANKS to all the AWESOME ARTISTS who entered in PART 1! I really wish we had MORE TIME to use more of those assets. Many SWEET TUNES and AWESOME SPRITES were left under-used. This saddens me, but do know you work is not UNLOVED!

HERE'S to an AWESOME NEW YEAR!

ORIGINAL POST:

Anyways, I'll be getting some real work done tomorrow afternoon after my classes. I'll primarily use Oryx's lo-fi sprites, but I definetly want to search out and use other people's art. :D I'll be programming in BlitzMax and I'll be able to compile it on Windows, Max OSX, and Linux. I want to use the 1-bit sprites, but if I find it gets to bland I might have to switched to the colored stuff. I'm going to go for a puesdo original-gameboy feel. I might royally screw it up but this is my first compo anyways, so screw it, this'll be fun. Beer!

Lo-Fi 1 Bit to the extreme.

Actually, this'll be 2Bit, with a staggering 4 shades of grey! Just like the original gameboy! :D

This also definetly be featuring the musical stylings of zpxlng.

And here's a dragon:

Thanks, I frankly think they have more character than the colored ones...

I'm not entirely sure how this will turn out.. currently I'm thinking of a simple side-scroller/platformer with light RPG elements.. like only a few things to collect and enemies to slay until the boss battle. Currently the game is 104x70 just scaled up by 8. I've never made a game with such little room. But this seems to be a good resolution for what I want to do.

Well, according to Wikipedia the original GB resolution was 160x144, so you could give yourself a bit more room without the retro police coming for you  Who, Me?

I really like the demo - it's impressive how many wacky graphical effects you've manage to squeeze into the graphical constraints. And the music works really well.

Thanks for all the comments. Smiley

Well, according to Wikipedia the original GB resolution was 160x144, so you could give yourself a bit more room without the retro police coming for you  Who, Me?

Yeah, I found that out AFTER I settled on this resolution, the thing is, if I did do 160x144 then each pixel would have to be 5x5 pixels big, and then I'll actually have TOO much room and it wouldn't look like I wanted. So this is definitely a puesdo-gameboy game because I actually want to see if I can manage with only 104x70.

I really like the demo - it's impressive how many wacky graphical effects you've manage to squeeze into the graphical constraints. And the music works really well.

Thanks. Beer!

Today I want to get some optimizations in and get some real gameplay going.  Beer!Hand Thumbs Up Right

Finished basic saving/loading for the level editor, now I can actually make levels look like things! Beer!

I am also trying out Atuun's and Saros's sound effects. Between the two of them I think I'll have enough for my game, also ATTACKS!

The weird things on the right are bolts from the mage's staff! They fly the furthest and will be able to destroy special blocks, but the Archer's arch a bit which may help with the final boss. The warrior's shots only go 2 blocks and do 1 damage, but they'll knock enemies back!
