paul i am sure that with where you stand in the indie game community, with lost of powerful friends and whatnot, surely you can help change the path that indie advertising is heading? help come up with and implement some form of system that helps good indies advertise their good games without having to spark controversy?

o great paul eros, call upon thy powerful djinni allies to help the poor indie developers to become rich without resorting to vile knavery.  YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE to create the uncontroversial fountain of indie wealth.  through you, all peoples will see the greatness of indie games, and they will shower us in fast cars and hot women in exchange for the honour of playing our masterpieces.

It's also not really the guys doing the controversy shtick who should be put to blame but much rather us for being so easy to manipulate.

You don't need to be an asshole to get people to notice you. A bunch of friends can work too. Most of the stuff I take any REAL notice of comes from stuff people I follow on Twitter retweet.

aquaria = famous for being "a game for women and fags", for taking forever to make, for being slow and having to figure stuff out yourself, which a lot of people hated; those that did felt the game was overhyped
This is completely retarded. That's the kind of 'controversy' that only happens AFTER you have a successful game. I think you're being disingenuous for the purpose of prolonging a debate which wasn't that interesting to start with.
I agree with that.
Also, Cave Story, which is arguably the game most of the indie scene "identifies" with, doesn't have any kind of controversy surrounding it, or at least it didn't before release. Neither does La-Mulana, also one of the most revered indie games.
