One thing I just saw: Maybe the two bars (the one showing the time left to finish the painting and the progress bar) should go in the same direction so that the player can easily see if the painters can make it in time or if it would be better to assign another painter to it.

By popular demand, eyes closed when sleeping:

I like it! I've always hated in-game tutorials, because most of the time I like to figure things out on my own.

Thanks! Yep, me too.

I like the way you are trying to show the player as much as possible without hindering them with a cumbersome tutorial. The only thing I might be iffy on is assuming that the player will automatically know to drag the artist to the painting just because the player sees the artist sleeping in a bed. Perhaps have a question mark appear above the artist's head when he/she sees a canvas for the very first time?

Not a bad idea, but I think it should be fine. The player will at least try to click the artist, and by clicking him he'll find out he can drag.

One thing I just saw: Maybe the two bars (the one showing the time left to finish the painting and the progress bar) should go in the same direction so that the player can easily see if the painters can make it in time or if it would be better to assign another painter to it.

I can try that and see how it looks.

Edit: It was weird to me at first, probably because I was so used to the old way, but I see how it's easier to see if you're gonna make it or not.

I think I'll keep it like this, thanks for the suggestion.

Hey, sorry for the week of inactivity. The festival (SBGames) deadline was extended by a month and I lost some motivation, then I was busy with some "real life" stuff.

But yesterday I developed a tool to help me get back on track. It's sort of a productivity trigger, I'm gonna test it for a while and share if it turns out to be useful. I've used these before and they worked.

It's still gonna be a busy week for me, and I'm still very concerned about my savegame structure, but I'm coming up with solutions and I think it will be an interesting challenge to take on.

Have a screenshot:

Thanks!

I enjoyed the alpha!

Quick feedback:
  • I would prefer no scrolling - it doesn't add much but is a bit exhausting for me
  • I would prefer more variation in the early phase
  • It would be nice to have the request bubble on mouseover to enable better planning

I wonder why the nude model has chairs surrounding her podium. Aren't they supposed to draw her, or are they just going to sit down and enjoy the view?  Who, Me?

of me describing to Morvan (the game's soundtrack composer) the sound effects I would like him to make. I do some noises with my voice and mouth as examples.

or something
whatever

Thanks! As you can see in the video, scrolling has been removed. I'm not sure what you mean by variation? More mechanics, more stuff to do?

I'll test the request bubble on mouseover and see how that goes, thanks again.

Why not both?

After watching that... I kind of want to play the version where everything you do results in "or whatever". Drop a chair... "Or whatever". Click on a button "or whatever".

Me too, saluk. Me too.

I found an exploit where you can stack painters in the same tile by having them leave the guild and come back, because they always come back to the same tile. This way you can make all your artists work at once in the same painting, finishing it very quickly.

So I gotta fix that.

There is also no current limit to how many artists you can hire. That needs to be implemented. I think it will be 9 just because that's how many portraits currently fit in the bottom-left UI. It's more than enough, probably. It's also a good number to match my "+1 artist per room" idea, so you need to expand your guild to hire a new artist and you can expand it 7 times. If you start with 2 slots for artists, then it can go up to 9. Which fits.

I think the pacing of new content is too slow. I would like to expand faster, invest earlier in more furniture and so on.

Variation:
  • Beside that it would be nice to have another meta task to work on (right now i am focussing on getting enough coins). Something like a special project...lets say a super difficult painting which will start a new era or invent a new painting style. This would be optional and not a request still with a time limit.
  • And/or i have to take care of having enough paint/creating paint. Might be too much micro managemnent though

Thanks! Yup, I agree with you and I'll see what I can do. Creating paint has already been added for this purpose.

Working on some historical events while I figure out how to deal with the "special project" thing. I really think it should be about sending your painters outside, because artists often had to paint walls and roofs and decoration of churches, so their work wasn't always inside the guild. I feel like this should be represented.

The event is the publication of Il Libro dell'Arte by Cennino Cennini, a really cool old book.

Wish I could add more quotes, he has some great ones  Smiley

Edit: I should add some decoration to this scroll. The yellowish rectangle is just a placeholder while I figure out what size it must be, but once it's done I need to make it prettier. I think there will be some artwork included at the top as well, like the Crusader Kings 2 or Total War events.

"Great work" event. You send artists outside the guild for a few months for $$$

Good game.

I'm checking painter's guild since it came out on Kongregate. Keep up the good work man, I'm aeger to play your game  Wink

I'm eager to finish it and play it too, thanks for your support!

Edit: I had a cooler idea for how the slots can work. Here's a mockup:

Instead of being independent, the slots are parts of the building. The expectation of the patrons isn't about each slot, but about sections. The left side, the center, the right side. The walls, the roof. This is represented by the numbers around the building. You need to match the minimum requested number with the sum of the skills of the artists you pick. So it's 3 vertical sums and 2 horizontal sums in this case.

It's more gamey and I think it will be more fun to respond to. One thing that will make it even more interesting is when a specific style is requested. If you fill the slot with an artist of the requested style, you'll get an x2 bonus for his skill. If he paints in a different style, it will be /2.

This should also allow you to leave slots empty as long as you can fill all the requests.

I think I should go for a 3x3 grid.

And add a colorful rectangle background behind the numbers and the %chance. Red if unfulfilled, green if fulfilled. %number goes red below 50 and green above it, I guess.
