The forceful severing and theft of developer tongues is a major problem facing the indiestry as we know it.

We will not be silenced by the corporate world, this post is an glimpse of the future if we allow the big business overlords to control the indie game market any longer.

It's not stabled to some nutsack,
Its not massagging a brown eye.
Its not flapping in the wind as if to say you suck.
It hasnt been cut off,
It hasnt been sucked on.

Facepalms.... now here i am talking about something I aught not..
Lets get back to talking about GAMING and BUSINESS....

Coincidence?  I think not.

Such poisoned words are the machinations of the corporate machine given flesh.  What manner of flesh?  Tongue flesh.

Ummm....

I am using two programs to assist in the construction/production of my game. OpenERP and ProjectPier. OpenERP I am using for accounting and keeping track of man hours and legal matters. ProjectPier I am using as a repository and milestone tracker with my team.

Today I did a check in the back logs, and tallied everyone's work hours.

And what really dug a thorn in my pecker, was the fact that I had started this back in Jan. And have a total of 7 people working with me on this project. And it's only Oct. I have 2900 hours logged into the creation of this game. And everyone else combined dont even come close, not even in the 1000's.

Now... My question is...
Should I tell them to take a hike? Or should I become a neo-nazi dick and tell them to put some lead in their feet, and speed up their work?

I know this does not paint a pretty picture for me over all. But it bothers me a lot, that all these guys who claim they want to be part of the game process, aren't showing their true devotion....

And it just seems like they are along for the ride, do a little here and there, and then get a decent pay out in the end..

I need input from you guys.. How SHOULD I handle this matter?

it's too early in the morning and not sure if should go for snarky sarcastic answer or real politically charged diatribe.
Will answer later in the day  Gentleman
Maybe just the general good mannered advice should suffice, maybe the OP is just misguided and needs another POV, and a little bit of guidance.

If you are hiring them by the hour or for a flat rate, then they should be working as much as you pay them. If you're not, then obviously they will not work on it nearly as long as you will.  The fact that they put 1000 hours into the game if they are working for free is still pretty damn good, so yeah, I don't get what the problem is?

It's been 9 months, and you have about 17 months (2900/40 == 72.5 weeks) of full-time work into it? And you want to do that all the way to some time in 2015?  Shocked That's some serious commitment and drive. I certainly wouldn't ask that much of anyone working for me though.

You've probably come across under-performing team-mates before, right? Just figure out where they need to be performance wise and help get them there, assuming they agree to go for that new level of production.

If they're working for free (i.e. profit shares later) you don't have as much sway over their lives and may be unable to get more work out of them no matter what you do. It all depends on their individual situations.

Based on this sentence, let's assume they aren't being paid now and the team agreement is to evenly spread the profits. You need to convene with them to rewrite the agreement because it will act like weights chained to your feet as the distance between you and them in hours increases. I believe the even-split agreement is ideal for people of similar skill and devotion, who work in close relation to each other, and probably work in different disciplines (like the good 'ole artist & programmer pair).

Since you're tracking hours that last paragraph may be pointless though as you may be splitting proportionally by percentage of man-hours that led to the final product. In which case... You can either get used to the lower hours from your team or find people who can put in the near superhuman efforts you can (or at least, an amount acceptable to you) and pitch the vision to them until someone will.
