Hello! This is my first post here. I am glad I discovered this website.

I have just started making my first video game along with a few others whom I am starting a company with. We had the game design document done, the engine, etc.

We just interviewed artists that we want to use!
However, we are not sure how to budget paying artists.

After asking around it seems that we want to use a flat rate to pay the artists.
How do you determine a flat rate for artists with out under or over paying them?
Is there any advice you guys could give me on how you determined what to pay artists?
Do you have to pay artists differently based on making concept art versus character art?

Any advice would be great! Thanks! Smiley

Send an asset-list to 5-10 different artist with the skills/style you are looking for, and ask for an estimate. That way you should get an idea of the average price you should pay.

that seems pretty simple, yet effective!

Thank you very much for the advice!

When you say 'flat rate' I assume you mean one single sum payment for all the art assets you need for this project and yeah, the only way you're going to find a reasonable number is if you send the job details to other artists and ask how much they would want.

I've worked as a contractor doing 3D models for games before, if you send the details of the job to me I could tell you what I would charge, I'm sure there's others on this forum who could so the same
