Microsoft is stopping the Messenger service on March 15th, telling people to use Skype instead.

I still used Messenger as my primary IM service (with a third-party client (aMSN) because Microsoft's one didn't work properly). Having to go to Skype (since that's what everyone uses besides MSN nowadays) is a huge downgrade for me, considering the focus on video/audio conversations instead of plaintext conversations and the lack of features resulting from that, as well as the lack of option to just get a third-party client if you don't like the original one.

Your thoughts?

Ugh, Skype's client is bloated crap.  Really hope there's a standalone Pidgin plugin for it soon.

Yeah, I don't mind MSN dying. Most of my contacts switched to gTalk years ago. But I hate that fact that I'll have to use a separate client for Skype now. Having several chat programs running sucks.

Yeah, Pidgin has this : http://code.google.com/p/skype4pidgin/

But it requires Skype to be running, so it's still there hogging RAM and CPU. Sad

I personally like skype because of group chats. It's basically an irc channel with people you can add to your account list and persistent logging.

Actually, MSN has had this feature since at least 2002. There've been a lot of situations for me where a window suddenly popped up (invited to convo) and 5-10 people were suddenly sending messages almost faster than I could read.

I will still use Trillian. Maybe Trillian will learn to interface with Skype.

I just added skype through Trillian, works fine. Feels better this way, like blademaster said skype takes up too much space on the screen and cpu memory.

skype also installs updates without asking you and its service is worse than it was before since it was bought by microsoft

of course its also a big bloat and has a buncha stupid SKYPE HOME and whatever things

i was still on an old msn where you could draw things (only in 16 colors for some reason) i liked that one and the one before

if you could draw in skype it would be hype

Don't mind it. Personally hate Skype as an IM because it's designed for webcam and I don't want to webcam. I either use YM or google's chat, but nobody uses YM anymore. Facebook's is ok too, if you're actually talking with people you know IRL.

Invited group chat != persistent group chat.

trust me, i had been an msn user for nearly 10 years

It's a good thing everyone in Poland uses Gadu-gadu, which has a ton of clients to choose from including Pidgin. Never had to touch Skype or MSN, I used ICQ breifly before G-G gained popularity.
