Everyone likes music (I'm sure someone doesn't, but they're no fun  Lips Sealed) so post your recommendations here, with a small description if you feel like it (game soundtracks are cool too, as they are some pretty incredible ones out there).

So here are a few to get the ball rolling:

Bonobo (all his albums!): great jazz with a good groove to it (I use "jazz" for lack of a better word; his stuff is hard to pin down).  It's great for driving (or walking, or biking) around a city at night.

Start Breaking My Heart by Caribou (formerly Manitoba): a really atmospheric electronic/jazz album; a favorite that I keep coming back to.  This is actually the only Caribou album I like, as his later music is what I'd describe as "hippie music."

The Cinematic Orchestra (all albums!): beautiful, cinematic jazz full of emotion (the most recent album is pretty different, but quite good, just in a different way).  I'm actually considering creating a Knytt Stories level around their song "Night of the Iguana."

So, what do you respectable gentlemen listen to?

Yeah, Cinematic and Bonobo are great, and I've heard some RJD2 too, but just haven't got around to getting some of his stuff; that song you linked too is definitely really awesome.  Lots of great stuff from NinjaTune!  Lucky Fish, getting to live in the same city as NinjaTune!

Wagon Christ (Luke Vibert) is another one of their artists I like, but some of his songs are a bit too weird.  I desperately want someone to make an indie game using the characters and animation style from this video:

Oh, and I feel stupid asking, but how do put the link into a word instead of showing the whole address?

"Split the Stream of Time" is a fantastic fan remix of the songs in Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco the Dolphin: Tides of Time. The music from the Ecco games were already awesome, but his remakes are even better Grin
It's all very ambient, with the exception of a few creepy techno selections. All of it's really good, though!

Also, Josh Whelchel's (known here as TwiTerror, I think?) soundtrack for Bonesaw: The Game is also really good, if you're in the mood for some game music.

Free music inside! I recently discovered this great singer-songwriter Ruth Theodore. Don't be put off by the singer-songwriter tag if you're not into that, neither am I usually, but she has some great guitar and composition skills. Something about her is vaguely Tom Waits-ish, though she doesn't really sound like him. Perhaps the great writing. Or the slightly dark atmosphere.

Anyway, the best part is that her album Worm Food is free to download off Jamendo. Do it. You must. I'm in love with it. http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/17052

I've totally been listening to a ton of Why? lately, and am thinking it's awesome.
This is one of my favorite songs from he.

Also, anyone here heard of Tubular Bells? It's a great experimental music project by Mike Oldfield, in which he played all of the instruments and then layered them to make the music. In fact, his work was what kicked off Virgin Records! His music is pretty darn good, really. I liked it.

Focus. Best yodel rock there ever was.

Also, I find the stop making sense talking heads concert video is pretty addictive:

Descriptions would be nice, as I don't like the effort of clicking on the link and listening to the intro of the song and not liking it. Think of those seconds wasted.

Free music is the best, therefore;

Animassacre - Very nice industrial/ebm band with some powernoise elements. Free album and they are badasses.

goreshit - Um, super noisy breakcore stuff. Nothing too serious but warning to those that don't like anything super noisy.

raptorface - Very nice chiptunes. The whole 8bitcollective site seems pretty damn wicked, in fact.

DJ Ninja Love Mistake - Basically, "He makes gameboy speedcore , focusing on anime , internet culture and Pokémon!". http://www.last.fm/music/DJ+Ninja+Love+Mistake/_/Melt+like+a+slug

hmm.

Death metal: Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Cynic, Atheist, Immolation, Soilent Green, and Nile.
Punk: DS-13, Skitsystem, Tragedy, We Live in Trenches, and
Hardcore/grind: Converge, Nasum, Discordance Axis, Dropdead, Brutal Truth, Genghis Tron, Behold... the Arctopus, and many others. Shit, this list is already getting too long. Oh well.
Electronic shit: Photek, Merzbow, Tangerine Dream, old Vangelis stuff, Autechre, Biosphere, and the soundtrack for Killer7.
Pop, etc: old Genesis (before Peter Gabriel jumped ship), Yes, The Smiths, Pearl Jam, Focus, Lee Clayton, Flogging Molly, The Advantage, Asa-Chang & Junray, Gogol Bordello, and too many others.

Long list I know, but hey.

I like these guys a lot, they're sort of a more rock influenced bluegrass band, and this world definitely needs to see more of those imo

One of my favorite songs in general:

Dude, none of that is even remotely "pop" Grin Well except for the Smiths. But okay, genres suck anyway.

But, since you are into Gogol Bordello, do you by any chance know The World/Inferno Friendship Society? Their fan bases seem to overlap somewhat. I've developed an unhealthy addiction to that band over the last couple of months.

Here's a video with one of their songs (with a random fan-made anime video, so ignore that):

Thanks Orestes!  I did a quick search for a similar thread, and nothing came up, so creating it seemed like a no-brainer.

OK, here's some video game ones this time:

Overclocked Remix: the best in game music remixes, and all free!  They've been accused of having too high standards and general pretentiousness, so you know it's high-quality stuff (at least any mixes from the past few years).  I have so many favorites from this site it's not even funny; maybe I'll post some specific remixes at some point.
http://www.ocremix.org/

Alright, this one's a bit of a joke, but I think the "Rockman [Megaman] X" jazz album from the early 90's is great.  Yes, Capcom released an official jazz remix album of Megaman X, and it's soaked in that 80's/90's.....sound?  Good for a laugh if anything. Here's the link for a free download: http://blue-bomber.jvmwriter.org/index.php?title=Rockman_X_(Album)

Frank Klepacki: if you played C&C back in the day, then you know this guy's stuff well.  His scores really gave those games the atmospheres that I remember them for; whether fighting a not-so-cold war in the Red Alert games, or exploring a much darker world in Tiberium Sun.  In fact, his music is so great that I even listened to some of the Red Alert 2 soundtrack while reading the news about the whole Russia/Georgia thing this last week. Yes.
