Hello all! Im just curious on the website itch.io. Is there good traffic? Are mostly developers on there, not really consumers? Would it be worth the effort? Any short experiences or personal facts or whatnot would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I use itch.io regularly to post small game prototypes, because the site supports WebGL games from Unity and there is a good traffic of users. Second but not least, a lot of games from indie developers, a lot of assets to buy or free. In my opinion, I would not expect your game to be visible enough, same way if your game is on Steam but IGN, Polygon  or others do not write a review of your game.

Itch, just like Steam, is not an alternative to marketing. You need to generate traffic by yourself. If you get your game into the top games list for its tags, then you may get a traffic boost, otherwise you will get virtually nothing.

Hosting on itch is free and instant (no review process), and it has a bunch of nice features for developers.

If you are selling your game, itch lets you set whatever pay cut you want, and by default it's 10%. I gather other stores take more like 30-35%.

I have one downloadable game on itch. It's not a very big or particularly great game, but it's reasonably complete and fun. It's free. It's not in the top 10, but it can be in the first few pages depending on what tags you browse for. It's been up for about 17 months, and in that time it's gotten about 129 views and 35 downloads per month. 4 people decided to donate a few dollars for it.(!) The traffic has slowly gone down; nowadays it's getting less than 1 download per day. In the beginning I drove some traffic to it with facebook, twitter, and a few forums, but only in the first few weeks. Now the traffic is about 45% from itch, 45% from a Gaming-on-Linux article, and 10% from tigsource (not sure how people find it here tbh).

It takes very little effort to put something on itch, so I don't see how it would not be worth it, but you shouldn't expect any storefront to magically make you money without any effort on your part.

These aren't traffic numbers, they're global rankings. As in, #1 would be the most-visited website globally (google), Steam is the 185th most-visited site globally, etc. Gamejolt is at the bottom of the heap here.
