Very cool!

Many thanks to you :-D

As for what's up recently, I'll shamelessly copy the update from the tumblr devlog:

I've moved back to the VN segment and I'm working on dialog variance, and writing the actual dialog for many currently unscripted events.

These past few days I've added lots of variance to the starting message in Honey's Room: there were about 15 different possible messages depending on a situation check (about 15 different states to pick from, but only 1 line for each different state, such as a line to comment on your current reputation, or tiredness level), but there are now around 150-200 (around 10 for each, plus special cases), which should allow for far greater variety, in a single game and hopefully even during replays.

Today, I’ve reworked Coach’s lines for the “general advice” line of questioning to include hints about the new moves and special rules, reworked the noticeboard since some of the feats have changed (again, due to the new moves) and added plenty of new dialog regarding Carrion Wind and her match against Honey, or the one you can attend from the audience.

I've also relinked the correct variables to produce the right effects if you do witness her match: witnessing a match allows you to land critical hits during a match, and affects the stats of your opponents. However, the stat changes were overridden by changes I had made recently to the matches themselves: originally each character’s stats was loaded once you selected “new game”, which allowed for direct and fluid modification of their stats during the VN segment, but they’re now loaded at the start of the matches to allow for more robust match behavior, as well as individually loading the match apart from the whole game flow - but that also means I had to find other ways to connect the variables to adjust their stats based on your choices during the VN segment. That’s done, though, even for Little Sun's match which had the same issue!

Next are the random events, and this is going to take a long while! This is probably the one thing that’ll keep me busy until the end of the year, if not even later. So expect stuff about banter in the parks, in the street, on campus, etc, but not much in the way of actual new features in the coming days/weeks!

Damn impressive, style-wise it gives me a 'anime and saturday morning cartoons had a lovechild' feel, that hand-animated look makes me want to throw vector graphics in the trash!

Inspiring!

Thanks a lot :-D I'd be lying if I said your reaction towards vector graphics is not one I have most of the time :-p (mainly because I can't manage to use them right :-D)

I don't think there'll be much in the way of updates for today's screenshot saturday, or until the end of the year for that matter as I'll be away soon for a few weeks. I'll say right now merry christmas to all, and see you next year for this adventure's next episode!

First update of the year!

The focus for a while is going to be the VN character animations, and here are the few test samples (sketches only for now).

Really cute animations you got there Kiss Are the other characters gonna be animated like that too?

Yeah, the plan is to animate every character in the VN segment with a similar style, to make a visual connection with the fighting segment! Going to take quite a while, but ultimately it should add lots of dynamism to the narrative parts :-D

Hot on yesterday's wheels, here's a preview of what it looks like (heavily compressed) once in the game!

Here's the first completed visual novel character, just in time for screenshot saturday!
She's one of the characters with the most animations, thankfully about half the cast has a lot less screen time and a lot less emotional range to show. Still, animating all of that crew is going to take a while, but it adds quite a lot to the VN segment!

Didn't even realize this game also has a VN part. Looks really neat! (Yes, I rarely read the descriptions in devlogs Durr...?)

Haha, yeah, you're not the only one :-D That's actually one of the big things I'll have to make very clear as I get closer to release, but since this is still so far off, I'm still taking and presentings things as they go without too much worry :-D But yeah, you spend a whole lot more time in VN mode than in fighting mode... even though it's the fighting that takes way longer to make :-D

The latest news is basically that it's moving forward with the VN characters:

Mom is completely done, and Curtis almost so - taking a break off him just to record this here demo of what it all looks like stringed together (although with some random framerate drops because of .gif shenanigans, I suppose). Also, some unfinished stuff, since the line on some of Curtis' stuff is not properly colored yet. WIP's, WIP's everywhere!

Considering it's a visual novel, I wasn't even expecting animations. Those look really good. Smiley

Totally agree. Most VN's look pretty stiff, but this could keep me entertained. Smiley

Thanks to you both :-) And agreed as well, I find that just because it's mainly focused on text doesn't mean some animation in there can't help convey some part of the storytelling as well (and fun!). In the early plans, I expected a tolerable dynamism discrepancy between match and VN segments, and thought making still sprites would work, but after testing, I found the dynamism gap was just too great, so I just had to do animations for that as well :-D It pushes back the planning for the finished game quite a lot, but I think it's worth it!

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 for the NDS had a similar way to portray conversations and I really liked it (just noticed that there's a similarity).

Absolutely! It's one of my main inspirations for this whole thing. I loved everything about their aesthetic! Random trivia: I even applied for an internship at Cing a few years back... was denied, and they closed down right after :-/

Another week, another character/batch of animations! This time, it's a video to show the prototype in action:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6lkvLyvLKs&feature=youtu.be

with a small .gif excerpt to preview what to expect at the link:

That's about a third of the animation-heavy VN characters done. Still some work ahead, but we'll get there!
