This might not be a 'proper' style, but it sure is amazing:
//photo-like stuff

(In case you didn't notice, these are acrylic paintings, made by this person!)

I don't believe. Holy spanking Jesus.

EDIT: I know it's not an image or a portfolio, but damn, just look at it!

Literally the only game I'm looking forward to for Kinect.

...are you being serious? That's some fantastic photorealistic art if ever I've seen some - dear god, that's just... wow.

Generic hyperrealism is generic and boring.

I have to agree. Hockney nailed it in Waiting for Hockney - "might as well take a goddamn photo!"

I think it's interesting! So much rendering goes into it. I think it's interesting ... like a mandala

(without the sprititual aspect)

(also without the whole thing about destroying the result eventually)

(but I like the meditative aspect of putting so much thought into drawing something that might as well just be a photo)

doing things slowly when they could be done much faster by more automatical means has its own charm, I think

Haven't actually read the thread so maybe it's been mentioned, but these monsters drawn on post-it notes are pretty great.

Just for clarity - I wasn't trying to diss hyperrealism in general but just being an asshole and pointing out that that specific dude is on the very bottom boring end of what hyperrealism can be/do.

For instance here's a personal favourite of mine, Gottfried Helnwein.

This is how big they are:

This one's "Adoration of the Magi" (just in case the idea doesn't hit you right away: The baby's the legendary Noble Wolf)

THESE ARE NOT PAINTINGS.

YOU ARE A LIAR.

No, um, photography in those? No men in yellow suits? Just acrylic paints and a steady hand?

Oh my. We need a monocle exploding emoticon. I guess

I don't know, some of these just seem to fall in the "bad photoshop" category.
Might have been cool ten years ago though.

it's only bad photoshop if you use photoshop?

and anyway, hyperrealism is cool I think for the fact that it's hyperrealism, even if it is as boring as reality.

Yeah, I wouldn't hang any of those paintings I linked to my wall, but just looking at them and knowing that they're not photos makes them seem rather amazing.

Ah, I really like that style!
It's very gothic and storybook-like.

It's just unfortunate that there are people that skilled that are just recreating photos.  Think if they actually made something creative and original, it would probably make me weep. Tears of Joy  Maybe part of their skill comes from recreating photos and not an actual understanding of light and forms though. Shrug
