So if you're a student (high school or higher education), you can get the full version to several Microsoft products for free!

I forgot how I discovered this but I got Visual Studio 2008 Profession Edition and Expression Studio. Check it out! https://www.dreamspark.com/default.aspx

Nifty. I was fortunate to be able to pick up VS2005 Profesh at the student discount price just before I graduated, but free beats discounted any day.

You can get XNA 2.0 for free.  While not anywhere near 3.0, it's probably the cheapest way to develop anything for the Xbox 360.

Uh, does XNA 3.0 cost money? It doesn't say that at all here: http://creators.xna.com/en-us/xnags_islive

XNA costs $99 a year to make games for Xbox 360, PC dev is free though.

you can make Xbox 360 games in XNA 2.0 too. 3.0 is free too.

But you'll need a dev account to actually be able to add it to the 360 and thats the thing that cost per month.

To deploy your games to the 360 you'll have to have the Premium membership which costs $99 a year. However, with the Dreamspark deal you can get this feature for free with the one year trial. To actually have your games on the community games channel you would still need the Premium membership though.

XNA Game studio (all versions) is and has always been free for all. And visual C# express edition 2008 which is the least you need to go with XNA is free, too.
