hello. i recently attended the world premiere of "uwantme2killhim?". the red carpet was set up inside the foyer of a cineworld in edinburgh. directly out of frame from the photo opportunities was an extremely fat man wearing a green "I'm a Brony, deal with it" t shirt. all in all, a good experience. in terms of short films, "elysian fields" won the prestigious superb joe worst most boring and artless piece of shit of all time award.

Le Samourai is great. That reminds me that i should watch more french movies and samurai movies.

Yesterday i watched Immortals and it's the saddest thing.
It has this absolutely amazing art direction and great action scenes (it was the only american movie i remember having good and long fighting scenes), but the dialogues were so boring and cliché.

Just watched the documentary Helvetica. Definitely a must watch for those interested in graphic design, especially in typography.

Watched Napoleon Dynamite. Can't tell if I like it or hate it. It's like the actors are trying to hard to be funny in a stupid kind of way.

world war Z, terrible movie
I knew it was going to be a zombie movie anyway, but it was not even a very good one.

I've seen a shocking amount of good stuff recently.

Sullivan's Travels 3.5/4
- Fantastic film from 1941, really good. A rather well heeled comedy director sets out to experience 'hardship', so he can make the Citizen Kane of movies essentially. Surprisingly self-aware. It was a bit dusty in the room at the end too. I find it incredible how some classics can get so much into 90 minutes.
They Will Be Some Who Will Not Fear Even That Void 3/4 - Interesting experimental documentary set on Svalbard. Honestly I would have just watched hours of footage from that landscape: magical, frightening. If the name doesn't let on, it tries a wee bit hard and adds a faux fictional narration to the top, to poorly piece together random clips of researchers doing random things. I didn't mind so much (loved it to start, but some of it was particularly inane and dumb); added a weird element. Second half lets it down a bit, bit more humdrum, but nice ending.
La Jetee 3.5/4 This makes me want to take a month, grab a camera, some friends and make a film.
Upstream Colour - 3.5/4
The Bling Ring - 3.5/4 Excellent. I saw this a few hours ago and I guess I simply love Sofia Coppola. <3 :3 <3 A few short cuts make some of the more obvious themes a bit too obvious (because of the framing interview portions: one of the characters when asked literally spells it out). But an interesting, depressing look at desire through the warped prism of LA.
Really well shot throughout but there's a few especially nice off-kilter bits (I want to see her do horror), fantastic music and lots of teenage girls with nice clothes!

I think this has pipped Upsteam to my favourite film of the year so far (haven't seen seen Spring Breakers yet). Definitely more straightforward and less 'profound' thematically (UC hits me where it hurts, maaaaan) but I think it explores the themes a bit more fully.

Just finished experiencing the beautiful acting, writing, directing, and scoring of "The Quartet."

Upstream Colour is really good, wish i had watched on the theaters, but you really have to check Spring Breakers. It really understands it subjects and uses their language to construct the movie. The dubstep, the colors, the characters and mainly the repetition of phrases throughout the movie all have a purpose and it shows.

Just watched Goodfellas again. Everything about that movie is vintage; it's even filmed in the new Hollywood style. It has no overuse of cutting, and employs long deep focus shots and visual composition that focuses on movement. It lets dry scenes have dry shots and only uses fast cuts when totally necessary. It makes the violence and action completely unexpected, as it's not always preceded by some cheesy extreme closeup.

Agreed that the cinematography is one of the best aspects of that movie, which is really the case with most Scorsese films (I think?). I prefer Casino, however.

Watched Man of Steel. Fucking horrible. I was a sucker for purchasing such an expensive ticket (it was only available in 3d).

Will add Le Samurai to my to-watch list.

Scorsese's style spans eras of film. It's cool to see him bring retro stuff into his newer work.

Watched World War Z a couple of days ago. It's fairly generic zombie stuff, but well-done and enjoyable. The twist was mediocre, and the ending was massively rushed, but I liked it.

Watched Lincoln. I really enjoyed that movie. To be honest, I have no idea how a movie like Argo could win the Academy Award for best picture over Lincoln.
