FromSoft needs to take over the Castlevania series, then my life will be complete.

NO JOKE: i had a dream about a fromsoft developed 3d mario game once. it was similar to sm64 except the hub world was a grimdark castle that looked like a mariofied nexus with pipes to access the various worlds. there were coins strewn across the castle. it also had a stamina bar tho i don't remember what it did. unfortunately i woke up before i got to really play it.

castlevania already died when someone decided that what the series needs is to be singleplayer MMORPG goth anime metroid and somehow fans agreed?

If you're talking about symphony of night and the sorrow games, those are literally my favorites in the whole series.

Meanwhile, I decided to go back to Bloodborne (left it right before Father Gascoigne) and I'm enjoying the fuck out of it this time around. I guess a longer break from the Souls series and the poor beginning really did the trick.

I enjoy sotn actually (despite it just being a worse metroid injected with animeism, sporting amazing music and graphics as its only real merits). It's just unfortunate that the branding basically made any further actual castlevanias impossible

I finally started playing Dark Souls 1 a few weeks ago. Ending my second playthrough now. Gonna do a NG+ in Artorias' outfit and using the Abyss Greatsword. Very excited. It took a while for this series to finally click for me, but when it finally did... wow. The world and lore are sooooo good. I'd say the lore is better than any other game I've played. Dark Souls 2 is good too... not as good though. Seems more... bland in a lot of ways. Gonna play through it more next, then Bloodborne. Can't wait for Dark Souls 3.

protip: play bloodborne right now and skip dark souls 2 unless you really want more SOULS (which you probably will so...)

oh btw idk what the consensus on the research hall is but i love that place. it's the bizarre horror hospital/mad scientist lab level i wanted in the base game. i mean iosefka's clinic and byrgenwerth/lecture building come close to that in atmosphere, but none of them are fleshed out enough. i like how mazelike it is too.

research hall is From at the very top of their game, it's up there with tower of latria in terms of atmosphere, but better in terms of design imo. it's like the second half of anor londo and latria 3-1 had a babby. really good, economic use of space too, everything there feels absolutely essential. also i just love the visuals, the staircase + those rafters lit by giant windows in particular. also, I love loodweeg, he's one of my new all time favorites. I can pretty much reliably do his first form without taking damage now. <3 If you're talking about symphony of night and the sorrow games, those are literally my favorites in the whole series. I enjoy sotn actually (despite it just being a worse metroid injected with animeism, sporting amazing music and graphics as its only real merits). It's just unfortunate that the branding basically made any further actual castlevanias impossible if you mean the series stagnated with a new emphasis on the "metroid" over the "vania", then yeah I can appreciate that point. it probably would've been better for them to make new linear action games in the vein of castlevania 4 rather than churn out sotn clones with a lot of asset/concept recycling. thinking about pre-sotn castlevanias kinda makes me wish platinum could get the IP now. ahh there's just so many other developers that could do amazing things with it.

ludwig is the only boss in videogame history who becomes less grotesque as he transforms haha. i liked the fight but i could only win with valtr as an npc helper. also lol i never drew the connection between the name "ludwig" and beethoven. ludwig is just a normal german name, the equivalent of louis/louie/luis etc in other languages. but it makes total sense. he IS probably named after beethoven. the thought just never crossed my mind lol.
