I listen to music. I watch videos. I play games. I don't know if they're good or not. I don't know if I like them. Are things good?

on a global social level Hans Rosling says they're substantially better than you probably think and I trust him
regarding entertainment media I have the same issue. I keep watching a movie now and then, maybe even play a game, but nothing really does anything. Sometimes a song is good if I'm feeling unstable I guess?

Have you bought anything recently? People who buy things are happy. Directly correlated market research and all. Advertisements are about happy people. News is about sad people. The news makes people sad so they go buy things, then they'll be happy like the people in ads. Then there's fashion magazines; meaningless.

Things are blork.

actually that only works if buying/having new stuff gives you recognition from your social network (I made this up on the spot but it makes sense)

If all else fails, you can lean back, kill some time, and let optimism bias do its work.

Yeah, all these facts and opinions look the same. I can't tell what's good either.

Things are pretty good, but it always feels like there is something missing. That is why I make things.

real talk tho, no one can give you a definitive answer to that and i think everyone asks themselves the same questions from time to time. you could try reading up on aesthetic theory a little if you want a more intellectual look at why cultural products are/aren't good.

Beasts Bounding Through Time

Van Gogh writing his brother for paints
Hemingway testing his shotgun
Celine going broke as a doctor of medicine
the impossibility of being human
Villon expelled from Paris for being a thief
Faulkner drunk in the gutters of his town
the impossibility of being human
Burroughs killing his wife with a gun
Mailer stabbing his
the impossibility of being human
Maupassant going mad in a rowboat
Dostoyevsky lined up against a wall to be shot
Crane off the back of a boat into the propeller
the impossibility
Sylvia with her head in the oven like a baked potato
Harry Crosby leaping into that Black Sun
Lorca murdered in the road by Spanish troops
the impossibility
Artaud sitting on a madhouse bench
Chatterton drinking rat poison
Shakespeare a plagiarist
Beethoven with a horn stuck into his head against deafness
the impossibility the impossibility
Nietzsche gone totally mad
the impossibility of being human
all too human
this breathing
in and out
out and in
these punks
these cowards
these champions
these mad dogs of glory
moving this little bit of light toward us
impossibly.
