Something about a list of 'canon' for a genre I've never heard of makes me a bit uncomfortable... especially when I've read many of the books on that list, and a fair number of my favorite books are up there.
What is this obsession with 'genrefying' everything you come across? Does anyone else feel that our compulsive need to classify so hamfistedly in a sense reduces all these great novels? Where's the similarity between The Trial and Gravity's Rainbow?
It makes me very sad when people co-opt the works of great authors to fill their silly little lists. Labelling something as 'slipstream' doesn't give you any information about the book you don't already know -- all it does is breed a perverse association between entirely unrelated books on the basis that they are weird.
I think I can pin down what it is about this that makes me uncomfortable. It's the definition of slipstream as 'a kind of writing which simply makes you feel very strange.' Placing Invisible Cities in that category is like filing The Seventh Seal under 'movies about chess.' Yes, it sort of fulfills that description, but it's hardly the crux of the work, is it? So what's next for the idea of 'genre?' Perhaps someone would like to campaign for the recognition of 'films with barrels in the third scene' or 'rock songs with sparse hi-hat arrangements?'
I know this is unrelated to indie games, it just makes me kind of furious when people pull this stuff.

Pacian, ultimately what I'd like to do is to have a separate "Introduction" thread for IF games, just like what we've got for "doujin shmups" right now (contributed by Postman). So, I don't know, if this is something you're interested in, I'd love to work with you on such a feature at some point. I know Echo and Shih Tzu are knowledgeable about the IF scene, too, so it would be great to get contributions from them. I'd probably act mostly as an editor / organizer, although I've been saying for ages that I want to get into the current IF scene. I was really into text adventures as a kid.

I almost didn't link to the Wikipedia entry for slipstream, because it's so lame. If you check out Bruce Sterling's essay in which he coins the term to describe something he observes to be growing in literature, it's not quite such a dumb idea.

So, I don't know, if this is something you're interested in, I'd love to work with you on such a feature at some point. Sure, anything I can do to help. I'm no-one special, though, I expect you could find lots of people more qualified to help than me. I like to think I know a reasonably good selection of contemporary IF games, of many different genres and styles - but I also admit I'm largely ignorant of the history of the genre, and the workings of its current community (although I've been looking for an excuse to learn).

Man, this is such a great thread! My suggestion for this list would definitely have to be Battleships Forever. This game is an awesome RTS that is somewhat inspired from Warning Forever. The game is posted here: http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/battleshipsforeverIf any of you guys haven't tried it out, definitely take a look!

The best part of making this list is finding all sort of great new games. I think I'll need a couple of weeks off just to play all those games that I haven't had the time to try out! Keep 'hem comin'! :D

A Tale of The Desert's been around for aaaaaaages and aaaaaaaages. I'm amazed nobody here's heard of it yet. Then again, it's not mainstream indie :D

I played that a while ago. I liked the idea of the economy always driving toward the ultimate goal of creating pyramids... very educational, covering so many walks of life, and interesting how a natural hierachy develops, and clever how you're rewarded for helping newcomers understand the game. Clever, really.
It's just that I found travelling around sooo punishing that I didn't come back.

The reality of one's mind might be the wildest dream of another. It might be very obvious to you who created certain games but I'm a newcomer in this indie world. It's also part of the reason why I created this thread: when I started a few months ago I didn't know where to look. A list like this would've helped me out. Creating it really helps me actually Maybe I didn't look at the right place for the info, perhaps I didn't look deeply enough in the websites... Yet, I didn't know who created them exactly, without a trace of a doubt. No hard feelings, just pointing out that not everyone has as much knowledge about the indie scene as others. I'm the first to say that I need to learn more about it! To me, that's the whole point of this list. Anway, thanks alot for the names! I'll try to update the list very soon! Thanks!

No problem. Those three're just the most famous ones, and the ones most likely to get in official magazines and the likes Btw, you forgot to add Motocross Challenge
