A few days ago I started playing around with a new file in Blender 3D. I started this blend just to explore rendering in a low resolution, low-bit, retro style for game development.

After 3 days of hard work, this is my result:

Its far from perfect. But I think its a good start.

I would like to share the source file for anyone who is interested in generating 2D sprites from a 3-Dimensional work flow.

Have fun with it. Try just duplicating some terrain to make the "map" a little bit bigger and you'll see just how easy it is to work with.

I would really love to see what other can come up with. If you make anything, feel free to post your improvements and derivatives for the rest of us to see!

Cheers!

Reminds me of Yoshi's Island for some reason.
And it's awesome.

Do you think you could post some other examples?  It would be cool to see the original model side by side with the filtered version.

Really cool idea!

I'm not convinced that this same animation wouldn't look better with higher fidelity and anti-aliasing. However, I am definitely convinced that it looks beautiful either way and you are a fantastic 3D artist/animator/designer.

The aesthetic isn't 8-Bit (for a number of reasons I won't get into), low-resolution is the better term to use here. With that said, it looks really cool and I'd also like to see a game made out of stuff like this.

Yeah, it's not really 8-bit, though it definitely looks absolutely awesome. If a game looked like this, it would be absolutely grand. It reminds me of Yoshi's Island as well - the art style's really similar.

EDIT: Also, Eevee's up there on top?

Looks really cool, I'd love to see that art style in a game, but the creature on tops left eye looks a bit twitchy...

dude that is completely awesome! i love this style.
i was inspired by your post and put together a quick unity3d package that can do a similar thing.
(some spheres as a quick and dirty character and a cylinder as a platform)

if you have 3d meshes and animations for these objects we could drop them in instead of the simple geometric shapes i used.
then we could swing the camera about and do all kinds of realtime funky pixellated rendering on that 3d stuff you have.

you can view it here...

here is a package with scene...

someone send me a simple animated character i can try instead of these spheres please?

Very nice, very unique look for the sprites!

Thinking about doing it in real time, it may look really good...

I've always been interested in unorthodox 3D rendering like this. It looks amazing, and I think I want to do something really similar for my next game...

This is very interesting, but as with any "full screen effect", it could be hard to control in specific spots where you want something done a certain way.
