Something's wrong with your game, it keeps glitching out on me.
And by that I mean that I'm jealous and that you win.

I really like the car for levels where your enemies come from above you. If you're right up against the block above you, you can shoot right through it, which provides a nice bit of cover (especially when the top of the screen is full of Space Invaders).

The same is true for the space invader ship, you just have to be up against the ceiling when it happens. Remember folks, if you haven't seen the invader ship in a while, you're near a 1 block ceiling, and the game starts glitching: GO HIGH!

This is a very, VERY good idea, and it is extremely well executed. I LOVE it! Unfortunately, I think it is a deviation from the theme of the competition, so I can't vote for it. Sorry.

Regarding that, I'm surprised that you didn't just mess about with the VGNG until you found something suitable for this idea. It probably wouldn't take long to find something that would work I guess it doesn't matter though: the point of the contest was to make a game inspired by the name generator, and you've done exactly that :D

Originally this game was going to use player and enemy types inspired by the VGNG. The idea was that the game would spit out games with names that can be generated by VGNG. Unfortunately the artist I wanted to work with couldn't commit the time, but instead he suggested using existing games for all the components. I think it made the game a little less VGNG but a lot more awesome.

This has to be one of the most clever things I have seen in a while. I now know that the space invaders ship is one of the most poorly designed pieces of space crap out there thanks to you! Defenseless against a simple Gumba!

It could be that up and down change the direction of fire. You'd still be stuck on the Y axis, and get trapped every now and then, but at least if there's a whole heap of goombas below you you might be able to pick a few off.

Wow That was awesome. I'm happy that you didn't go through with your first plan of creating a tool that would allow people to play VGNG outputs I'm not sure if I'm allowed to vote, with my game being in the competition and all, but if I am then you sir, will get my vote!

Thanks again guys!
So... does anyone want to share their highscore? I just played a round and hit 9600. AFAIK nobody has hit five figures yet.
UPDATE: 12000. Just, y'know, putting it out there.

I need this. But the download from that site is REALLY SLOW. Any chance of uploading it somewhere else?
EDIT: Nevermind, works now.

So far I think this is on course for the big win... A few glitches could still be ironed out (unintentional ones like instant-death on level-change). I had no idea how you were going to pull this off - it's an amazing feat, and works really well.
A real homage to the classics. Thanks!

Completely sweet! I'm amazed this works so well, but it does A few glitches could still be ironed out (unintentional ones like instant-death on level-change).
Even instant death on level change feels kinda okay given the game (and the frequency of extra lives), but yeah, perhaps a second of flashing invincibility on level change would make the game softer and still keep the right feel ...
