In Larkin, you're a... circle. You carry with you, at all times, your trusty ball... thing. It spins around you constantly.

The entire game is controlled with the mouse. You can move towards the cursor with the left mouse button, but you're quite slow.

The right mouse button expands your ball's orbit, and puts it into "sticky" mode. It'll attach itself to obstacles, causing you to begin to spin around it. When the right mouse button is released, the ball is detached, throwing you out of your orbit. This allows you to move quickly around the level.

You can use the throwing mechanic to launch yourself into enemies. There's none of that "shoot from afar" nonsense, here. Also, your ball can stick to enemies. Some will act as anchoring points, while others will merely be dragged around you, allowing you to use them against their friends.

EDIT: 5 months later, I noticed an erroneous comma placement. How very embarrassing.

Looks interesting! Kinda sounds like the sorta thing we'll need to see in motion, though, to really get how it works. Smiley

What's with the name? Reference to Philip Larkin, or something else?

Pretty sure it's an homage to Barry Larkin, one of the greatest shortstops of all time.

Larkin about.
This guy has it.

Sounds like fun Smiley
I hope it will be! I started working on it on Sunday, and didn't get "into" it until Wednesday, so it's been a bit of a sprint.

Thanks for all the compliments. Hopefully the game'll live up to them Smiley Oh, and I've actually been considering having arrows as part of the graphics, but I doubt I'll have time to implement it to see how it looks anyway.

Round something nearly at an end,
And what cohered in it across
The years, the unique random blend
Of families and fashions, there

At last begin to loosen.

Dammit, Melly, you necromancer!

I kinda got depressed on the last day of the competition and didn't want to work on it any more, but I've twiddled with it a little bit since then. Honestly, there isn't more than 5 hours' worth of work to be done on it, so I'll hopefully sit down and sort it out sometime in the next fortnight.

Too bad, but I'm sure that it'll be a great game, it promises to be very unique. And I hope you keep that style, or choose one that's equally as appropriate, for the finished game.

It looks cool, and you've defined a nice tight central mechanic to explore. Good stuff. +1 on people who want to see this.

The control system sounds a bit like Guppy, and the tech demo of that game was really fun. I quite like the idea of control schemes that are initially difficult but very empowering once you get the hang of them.
