the original series, sure, up until the bullshit about instrumentality (which is what, exactly? it's never really explained)
They probably aren't going to spell that out any more clearly than it was in End of Eva. There are two alien entities on Earth, meant to seed a world with life, so they've got godlike power. They are two different types, with different aspects of power. There's not supposed to be two on the same planet, but Lilith came from the Moon hitting Earth. The Human Instrumentality Project is trying to gain the godlike power for humans. The biblical references are just names and images as decoration for this sci-fi backstory. Some westerners see this material as something they take seriously, but it's not particularly meaningful to the Japanese; for them it's just cool to use mythology like that.

Much like when westerners borrow shallow concepts of foreign cultures

Really not sure how I felt about it to be honest. Props to them for striking out in a new direction. Not sure they did it particularly well but still. Seemed pretty plot driven as opposed to character driven to me. And, as many people have pointed out, none of the 3.0 preview was shown at all in the movie, which is kinda weird.
You never know though, we may get a lot more detail explained in 4.0. Shinji (and therefore us) is told a hell of a lot more than he is in the series. Bloody exposition central with Fuyutsuki in this film.

they introduced a bunch of new mcguffins and sort of just left them dangling there. animation was godly but i feel like the more obtuse plot elements were just unnecessary.
So, it was faithful to the original in the end then. isnt that evangelion in general
You have no idea how much I wanted to make the post you made. The final make perfect sense to me
There are two types of people in the world: Those who completely understand Evangelion; and THOSE WHO ACTUALLY EXIST. I think the original was pretty coherent
Now you're just messing with us all. If it didn't leave you at least partly confused, then it wouldn't be Evangelion.

I'm not watching any of the new movies or series and feel completely justified in this. D:

(Just watched Evangelion 3.0)
Well, that was weird.
I have mixed feelings about this film, I like that that it's starting to really split off into a new story, but it kind of frustrating when it suddenly dumps a bunch of unanswered questions on you just after it (barely) answers the ones it begins with.
I didn't necessarily dislike it, and I'll probably like it more once I understand the shit that was happening at the end, but I definitely wouldn't say it's a positive feature.

Haven't had much time for animu lately, only been watching A Certain Scientific Railgun S episodes as they come out which is pretty cool but I feel like the main mysteries of the plot are ruined by having watched A Certain Magical Index.
Also on the topic of the Evangelion stuff, I think I'm going to wait for the 4th one to come out so I can get the whole picture and properly compare it to the original series, sounds rather different from what everyone is saying in this thread though.

If you really look into it and/or read a whole bunch of stuff on the fan wiki it makes perfect sense. That's why I love Eva so much; it seems like it's a load of shit that makes no sense, but then you realize it has a plot, and a really deep one at that! Mixed in with the Christianity symbols for 'coolness factor', everything goes super well together and leaves you thinking.

Let's say that eva has a lot of red herring, you expect a epic manga robot series and it's a personal almost author stories. If you pick the author angle you feel welcome, if you pick the mecha angle you are screwed deep in the ass ... I have little interest in cool mecha ... ... So I focus on the non red herring part and was rewarded with the ending.

So I bought Solanin like 5 months ago, but like a lot of my manga, I didn't read it, I have a huge collection of stuff I need to read, well my internet was down all day today and I decided to read it.
Man, that was good.

I guess what irritates me most about Evangelion 3.33 is that a lot of the plot happened because nobody bothered to explain anything to Shinji at the start of the film. The fact that they were so angry seemed weird as well, because Misato was cheering Shinji on at the end of 2.22.

ya it could all have been avoided if they had just shown shinji some basic fucking human decency but i guess they were too mad that he inadvertently killed most of what was left of the world via 2nd impact; misatos cheers were before he made that little oopsie

They were explaining to him. They did tell him what not to do. Part of the point of the film is Shinji ignoring warnings because he'd rather believe he'd saved Rei and then that he could save the world. There probably wasn't anything they could say to convince him he should do nothing.
And Misato wasn't cheering him onto start 3rd Impact. Stopping repeats of 2nd Impact is like her crusade.
