if you are an ex marketing/advertisement student who decided to change carreer to stick it to the man, or if you post on Tigsource...you know what you are...
A CIP (Completely Indiependent Person™) with CCC (Complete Creative Control™) of my life? EDIT: The connection between indies and hipsters is that hipsters have CCC of their fashion just like indies have CCC of their games. However, in both cases the benefits of the CCC are usually offsetted by the downsides of LOM (Lack Of Money™) or LOT (Lack Of Time/Taste/Talents/Team™).

Hipsters and indies, ninjas and pirates, space marines and anime girls. I see a connection. Then I forgot it, herpaderpaduu.

I liked space marines before it was cool.
No really, I had a Warhammer 40k Space Marine army way back in that stone age you generation Z kiddos refer to as "The Nineties."

Indie is how they refer to themselves, hipster is how they are referred to by others.

Hipster is sort of devalued as a term. Partially because it especially seems to be applied to weirdo urban youngsters.
IDK, I've met a lot of people that are regularly called hipsters, and I can't definitively say that ANY of them are hipsters, with the potential exception of my ex-girlfriend. That's only if you include the whole "i liked this before you, therefore i am superior and you are a poseur" behavior though.
It seems to be especially prominent on the west coast. Applied to young, urban, extremely liberal, socially conscious young adults.
youre not gay? myth busted

I own an original Space Marine army, including the Rogue Trader rulebook from like 1987. Granted they were actually my parents, so youre not gay? myth busted
Who said I'm not gay now?

I listen to music so obscure, hipsters haven't heard of it. I listen to music so obscure, Alec S. hasn't heard of it (this is probably true btw). Also, idk, the music hipsters listen to is usually not obscure. Stereotypical "hipster" bands would be Arcade Fire, Death Cab For Cutie, Neutral Milk Hotel, Pavement etc. You can walk into any chain bookstore that has a music section and buy an Arcade Fire CD. Pretty sure that doesn't qualify as "underground" or "obscure" by any meaningful standard.

Hipsters are those kind of people that are annoyingly-over-gay, but not because of their sexual tastes, but only because it's "hip" to be gay. (And if they're doing it to milk scholarship/grant programs... then it serves those programs right for discriminating against sexual-taste bias to begin with.) Another present-day indicator is a short-term fixation with anything "zombie," or posting YouTube vids of "x persons, x objects" in their titles. Indie and hipster couldn't be more obviously different. Indie is about disregarding excuses and pursuing one's goals/dreams, however cropped in scale they might be from resources. Hipster is about disregarding one's self in order to fit in and belong with someone/somewhere. Hipster-Indies (they are out there) are irony incarnate. People liking something bash-worthy, out of irony/spite is not being either, that's being a Troll. (Yes, there are hipster-trolls out there too, but the point is that troll != hipster.) Posting in this thread makes me feel like a hipster troll.

DIY culture is a purer expression of the indie mindset.
