1. Are you using dsfix with the 60fps unlock? That makes collision detection slightly glitchier.

2. One thing that makes souls games different from normal action games is the fact that you can't cancel out of attacks. I.e. if you press the attack button the entire animation always plays out. The games also have what is called an "action queue", meaning if you mash buttons, your character is going to perform all of those actions in a row, and since you can't cancel out of actions, well you get the point.

General tip for souls noobs: Play very defensively. Don't rush into groups of enemies, always assess your situation first. Try to pull as few enemies at a time as possible. A bow can help you with this. Make use of backtracking to lead enemies into choke points and possibly get some aggro off of you. If you're not confident at dodging (which is a little tricky), always keep your shield up running into encounters.

The lore of aldrich is relatively clearly explained by hawkwood (aka the crestfallen warrior): aldrich is a former cleric and cannibal whose taste for human flesh turned him into a bloated monstrosity. He got so out of control that he had to be contained within the cathedral of the deep and apparently fed with human sacrifices. The deacons constructed a grand narrative about aldrich being a saint to keep up this practice (this is in some item description). Shortly before the events of the game though, aldrich got bored of eating humans and wanted to devour gods instead. So he made his way to anor londo, where he consumed the last surviving god, gwyndolin, and i guess absorbed his essence somehow.

an interesting tidbit about this is that the player killing gwyndolin in dks1 is apparently not canon.

You're right except on one point, CA.

Aldrich didn't get bored of eating humans. Pontiff Sulyvahn brought Aldrich to Anor Londo to consume Gwyndolin, as Gwyndolin was the last remaining god and the Pontiff wanted to usurp their rule.

No it's a total DK clone. A significant portion of the demo consists of throwing barrels at crocodiles.

nioh has nothing in common with onimusha mechanically or artistically aside from 'demons, japan, timed blocks'

WHOAAA that's crazy. I was wondering what the tie between them was.

I still kinda think the part of aldrich that looks like gwyndolin is just a reanimated corpse and what we're actually fighting is the blob. that's gonna be my headcannon at least

this nioh demo sounds very divisive but on the whole sounds like it needs some seriously work, no?

oooh, that's interesting. must have missed that. i played this game almost completely blind and haven't watched any lore videos or anything yet, so this is just what i pieced together myself from the ingame tidbits i read.

btw like with every souls game, im enjoying the second playthrough more than the first.

well i think that's basically what's up anyway.

Which Onimusha?

Onimusha 1 and 2 play like Resident Evil with swords and magic (though less "survival"), Onimusha 3 departs from those mechanics quite a bit to create a more fluid system of movement and more streamlined mechanics (if you want to make a RE 1/2/3/ to RE4 comparison it'd be Onimusha 1/2 to Onimusha 3). Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams deviates even further to play almost like the halfway mark between Onimusha 3 and Devil May Cry (and is practically gaming perfection as far as I am concerned). I've played the series to death, forwards and backwards again and again. Like Dragon Quest, Onimusha is my gaming comfort food.

Ni-Oh, outside a similar setting (medieval Japan), looks more like a direct attempt to mimic Dark Souls.

Ni-Oh is a total Pong clone.
And by Pong he means Sonic the Hedgehog.

Or rather, yet another ill-fated spinoff of the series, Pongic the Hedgepong.

That's also the name of a foreign (unspecified) porno.

True story.

I'm using dsfix, but I didn't unlock fps.
I think I got the hang of it now. My initial 3 hours were: How can anyone like this? But the game is good enough to let you look beyond the technical flaws. They are still there but I think you just learn to deal with it.After that the game isn't even that hard.

The difficulty of Dark Souls is definitely greatly exaggerated. I died a million times in my first playthrough but that wasn't because the game was necessarily that hard. It was just my lack of understanding. I was too aggressive, never rolled and put points into the wrong stats. If you know how rolling works (and wear the right equipment accordingly) and play strategically, the games are still challenging, but not controller-breaking difficult. That's also why each Dark Souls game ends up being easier than the last for veterans. We already know how to play, so we end up beating most bosses on our first try.

I think Bloodborne is by far the hardest game in the series. Even after playing DS1 and DS2, I still got destroyed in Bloodborne quite a few times. I don't think its the slightly different style either. I think its just more challenging in a lot of ways. Enemies are much faster and more cunning. The AI on the hunter enemies was ridiculously good. They were better than 90% of other players.

for me it's DkS3 > BB > DkS1 > Dks2 > DeS as far as difficulty.

but idk, i think it depends on your particular skillset between souls and bborne, because they emphasize slightly different things. if you regularly play 3d action games like devil may cry, bayonetta, ninja gaiden etc, BB is probably going  to be the easiest for you, because it's a little bit closer to those kinds of games. or at least all the people i know who thought BB was easier played those games.

For me it's DkS3 > DkS > DeS/DkS2. However, DkS is atm easiest simply because I have played it so much. DeS was difficult until I played DkS and learned how these games work. I think that the DkS3 was hardest so far even though I know how one "should" play these games. While I know how to safely traverse and explore environments the actual encounters felt much more difficult and aggressive than in previous games.

i think the impression of "brutal difficulty" in souls games just comes from the fact that they didn't really fit existing genre conventions when they came out. they handled many things in ways that were highly unorthodox both for the RPG genre and the 3d action game genre, and this during a time where popular games were becoming increasingly standardized.

when demon's souls came out it was the first game i had played in a long time where i couldn't just transfer my skills and knowledge from other games but had to learn something new. that made a huge impression on me and is the reason why i'm still a fan of these games 7 years later.

str weapons are so good. cannot believe how much easier this game is when you just break guard, or stun every enemy in the game. thank you +7 Great Mace.

bosses made trivial by 2 handed great weapons: all
