I didn't actually play Bravely Default (yet?), but from what I've heard, the last part is probably what forced them to re-release the game with a turn off random encounters option.
I do want to pick it up sometime in the future though, once the price goes down a little.

And thank god they did. I hit level 99 with all characters and got to avoid all of that shit. It was nice.

That was actually one of my favorite features of the game I prefer they actually integrate it in-game though... Something like SMTIV's Estoma Sword or something.

That was actually one of my favorite features of the game I prefer they actually integrate it in-game though... Something like SMTIV's Estoma Sword or something. Personally, I hated the Estoma Sword being a spell. To have it on my MC meant wasting an important slot, and to have it on a monster meant wasting a monster's slot. That's something I felt should have been a menu option or Gauntlet App, and permanent unless you decided to switch it off, because recasting it is annoying with no tangible benefit. It didn't work on tough enemies anyway, so there's not really any harm in it. I guess the Bravely Default option may not make sense from an in game perspective. But then again, I prefer the SMT IV system of on field encounters (minus the Estoma Sword issues).

Apparently the game was designed to have random encounters on purpose to appeal to the retro Final Fantasy audience, which is one of the reasons they figured it would fail in the West. Though, that didn't seen to have a tremendous effect on sales.

The EO series has random encounters but they also give you a thing that indicates when a battle is about to happen [The indicator goes from deep blue to red as you take a step.] I really like it because it keeps the "random" element of encountering enemies but also gives you warning to prepare for it/plan for it [it's important when trying to avoid FOEs.]

You can't go wrong with either of the 3DS ones. If you want the original experience play EO Untold in classic mode. But EO4 is cheaper and is still a really good game, so it's a toss up there.

Am I the only one that finds EO (specifically 4) extremely slow?

welp the games are basically wizardry clones and the idea of sloooowly getting to grips with a dungeon (and slowly grinding levels so you can go further haha) is part of the appeal of wizardry. EO is actually pretty fast compared to other games in the "genre" lol.
i personally enjoy the pace in these games, i like the idea of getting really familiar with level layouts and etc, but i get that its not everyone's cup of tea.
(i haven't played EO4, only 1 and 3)

Maybe its because I came from SMTIV but it seemed like the battle intro/exit took a long time and animations were slow. It was the demo.

theres button u can press that fast forwards through all that (and i think animation speed itself may or may not be an option in the menu screen).
also wat i like about EO4 is that it's a game that respects the player and doesn't waste their time with any bullshit. you show up to the town, you make a party, and you're out and exploring the world within 5 minutes. no heavy-handed tutorial, no overbearing plot- just solid dungeon crawl mechanics. more rpgs should do this.
