Hello,

I've just released a game built in XNA on C# and would love to know what you think - download from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/65252269/Jumper_v1_5.zip and just do what feels right...

The game is based on Lima Sky's Doodle Jump, but the idea is to let everyone's ideas help shape future development. I have a facebook group here for just such a thing: http://www.facebook.com/groups/377809582246934/

A couple of screenies to whet the appetite:

Let me know what you think, and if you have any ideas for future releases.

Cheers

Okay, so I'll try to review your game as serious and as critical as possible. Taking every tiny bad thing of the game, and slapping it in your face. I guess you want to get this to be released on Iphone? No? I don't know, I just don't think many people are in the mood to play such game on there pc. Oh well, let's do the review.

Okay, after all let's just tell you what isn't good about the game in a list.

  • The game needs a logo. Every game does! Just plane text with a bit shade isn't a logo.
  • It's annoying to read the scoreboard. The numbers, names and scores should all be on 1 line. Don't center the complete text.
  • Also, the font of the text of the highscore, is too small.

    • Solution: Show only the score, and show more info if you click on it. Also, make a scroll function so you have more room for more highscores.
  • The way of falling is really weird. You jump, you hang a bit in the air, and bam, you fall with the same speed. Why isn't there any gravity?
  • What's up with the "Game Over" voice? It isn't really necessary. And even if it was, why such a dramatic low voice? The game is a fun childish game. Shouldn't the voice sound fun and childish too?
  • Needs more different jumping sounds
  • Not only for the highscore. Use a different font everywhere. White text with a shadow isn't always clear. Simply giving it a black border could change a lot.

Well.. that's most of what I can say about your game right now.
The main question is: Why should I play your game, while I could just play Doodle Jump? What has your game, wich makes it more fun to play? Think about that.

Hi, thanks for downloading and playing, and your frank review.

A few people have asked me if I'm trying to release on iPhone: No. This is not a commercial venture. The point is to build a functional game and then ask a non-development community for ideas to shape it. It could end up being totally different, and that's fine too. It's really been designed as a portfolio piece, as I'm looking to get a job programming C# and moving from the database world I'm currently working in.

You're absolutely right about the logo. And the text. There definitely needs to be some aesthetic work done, but it's taken huge steps since the early version I released in March, and I'm happy with the way it's going.

Scoreboard: Yes, I also agree with your points here. The scaling of the text is poor, and I'm thinking of implementing a scrollable scoreboard showing five results at a time, in a more table-like format.

I've worked on the gravity, and implemented an algorithm based on real-world physics that wasn't fun. I tweaked it, and it wasn't fun. I'll keep working on it, but for now this is the most enjoyable jump mechanism I've created.

Game Over voice: I'll get rid of it. I hate it too. I liked it at first.

As for why you'd play my game over Doodle Jump, well they're different platforms, different price points, and, as I mentioned, I'm asking the community to help shape future development, which you can't with DJ. Plus my game is more focussed on increased difficulty through platform changes, whereas DJ throws enemies at you to hinder progress. I guess that's all for now.

Again, thanks for playing and your honest opinions.
