ok i watched a ton of mario 64 n64 cart videos and you're right, they don't use the fog to hide when they cull geometry. The level geometry DEFINITELY has culling, but they go through great pains to hide it and its usually only visible in the edges of the screen.
also mario 64 is not a fucking sonic game.

That's because you don't understand the philosophy of sonic. It is not in mechanics, but it is in spirit.

mario is more binary and sonic is more analogue, mario 64 is the most analogue of the mario, no other 3d mario got back to this fact and neutered movement prowess in favor of level design rythm

But then I would like them to feel like more like tony hawk, I like the open world momentum idea more.

honestly if we're comparing mk8 and saasrt the latter is the better game
saasrt is like f-zero gx with a weird sega fetishist paintjob and bland weapons. but it's still something that feels like f-zero gx, except with really solid drifting.

Btw in the new game, while at least there is a balance character dynamic (which was missing or lost previously) they are flanderized beyond belief, knuckles is SUPER stupid, tails is SUPER genius, amy is ... the girl ... they actually removed any personality.
And sonic? Well he is a douchebag a SUPER ASSHOLE
I mean the banter is SUPER mean! it's like the subtitle could be sonic and friend: friendship is passive aggressive cynical douchebaggery

It seems the project has a major mid project crisis on content which might explain some stuff, the reveal trailer hint at stuff that aren't in the game. To understand you need to know about stuff from the sonic RPG fiasco (by bioware) and the ken penders fiasco ... as there is subtle hint of reference left in the game.
