SCV is not his finest moment though. He used to be hot. I know it's an out of game render, but still... let us weep for the lost hotness.

I prefer the other one. It might be because it's 2D, but I think it employs a stronger use of diagonals and I prefer its colors.

Look at this guy, look at his eyes and watch him stare deep into your soul That's how you design a character!

i had links to sprite rips; i guess the site i took them from wont allow me to share them ;___; these will have to do (its hard to find character art for this game...)... but the animations i linked to really had a lot of character... Maybe it's just that I spent so much time with them, but the Xg characters really are strong without fitting into obvious stereotypes. Elly's subtly sad expression, Fei's troubled soul, and Citan's sort-of scholarly style all worked so well for me without being overbearing or cookie-cutter. SIGGGGH... Xenogears...

Mitsurugi never quite looked like that render i linked anyway. So i'm over it (if i was ever under it), lol. He could though, with today's graphics. I know nothing else about her, but this image of Princess Garnet wows me everytime. Half the appeal is the way she's proportioned: See also:

How would you guys go about creating interesting characters? Where is the starting line? Anything to avoid, or make sure to do?

Jubei and Ohatsu from Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams I love those designs that emphasize lower body strength and mobility.

Tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell. Its AI borders on sentience and there's something really organic about the way it looks and moves, I guess it feels like a real character and not just a robot.

I love those designs that emphasize lower body strength and mobility. Definitely. The build of the female in Monster Hunter fits the bill, as well: And on that subject, Monster Hunter in general has awesome armor designs. Agnaktor is one of my favorites:
