EGP, a rapid game-prototyping project originally set up by Kyle Gabler and Kyle Gray, has returned from the dead. Apparently they're holding monthly game-making competitions on various themes. Check it out.

So can anyone enter the competition, and is there a theme for the July one? It's not really clear from the website what's going on.

No July theme yet, and I'm not sure if anybody can enter or not, but my guess is probably!  Well, hello there!

I think that is the July theme, as it was posted on July 6th!

Yeah, that's a little confusing. I think the gist is that they have a 7-day game design compo once a month. So maybe the Unexperimental Shooter one just ended, and they haven't started the next one yet?

My understanding is they give the concept at the start of the month, and you can do it any time that month, but you can only use 7 days to do it in.

Given the banner says "JUNE 2009 GAME THEME" I think this was the theme for the last month. I hope they give out the theme in advance so others can participate - even if they can't put their games on the site. EDIT: Also, they say "expect to see a new theme announcement for the month." So, we just need to hold tight.

If you have a day job Noir, can you take more than seven days?

If you take more than seven days, is it still a seven day game?

When I've done seven day games while working a full-time job, I always took care to start on a Monday, so that during the work week I would use commute time to think about design, and maybe get a half hour of work done each night, and then worked all-out on the weekends to finish up.  In general, I didn't even know what I was going to be doing until Thursday, anyhow, so I don't think that the full time job really slowed me down by much.

Although I'll grant that I didn't get many video games played or much television watched during those periods.  But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I was thinking of an interview or something with those guys that I read a while back. They were talking about how they made games in seven days. It seemed like the way they worked suited a student project where you can spend all your time on it (although perhaps they had other courses as well; I don't know). I'm just wondering if it's possible to capture the same spirit, if you only have five evenings and a weekend.
