Crystal Shard is proud to announce the release of Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok, available for FREE download!

Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you have a world to save, and must use your wit, guile and inventory to puzzle your way through. Like in many roleplaying games, you can customize your character with various classes and skills, and must train yourself in combat to stand a chance against the fierce monsters in your way.

The game is designed in the spirit and atmosphere of the classics, and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character classes and several solutions to many puzzles, the game has excellent replayability.

Features:
- Explore the rich world of Norse mythology!
- Three character classes with separate side quests: use your strength as a warrior, the arcane arts as a sorceress, wit and guile as a rogue, or create a hybrid with skills from multiple classes.
- 32 distinct voice acted characters with animated portraits.
- Over 100 hand-painted backgrounds and 10,000 sprites in animations.
- Many monsters, including giants, trolls, and svartalfar.
- High replayability due to optional quests, alternative solutions, and the three different classes.

Hi
This looks awesome. You really captured the look of old school adventure games perfectly. All I ask is that you try to avoid having non sensical puzzles that take guesswork instead of thought. Anyways, looks great, good luck.

Yeah, the game really is beautiful. And a female lead!

How does combat work, exactly?

How does combat work, exactly?
We're still working on the details, but it's closest to the system from QFG2. Basically you have a set of moves (or spells, if sorceress) and you can learn more later, and you have to use those in realtime while dodging or blocking what the enemy throws at you. Of course certain maneuvers are more effective against certain enemies; for example a parrying maneuver won't do much against an enemy that breathes fire at you. I hope that answers your question Smiley

Also, we are trying to put together a voice pack for this game!

So if you are keen, or know anyone who is, please visit this thread here:
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=47711.0

(Or alternatively, look up our thread on this voice acting board:
http://voiceactingalliance.com/board/forumdisplay.php?184-Original-Visual)

In particular, we are looking for female voice actresses, and will appreciate if you know someone who is interested and can direct them to us Smiley

Just bringing to your attention that we are getting near the finish line for this project! We now have an IndieDB page and have been sharing some info on what to expect in the game:
http://www.indiedb.com/games/heroines-quest

Also, our writer/programmer, Radiant, is planning to be at AdventureX in London on 7th/8th December! Admission is free, so if you’re in the area, you can meet him and check out a pre-release version of the game. For more info about AdventureX, visit http://www.screen7.co.uk/adventurex/index.html

Not to rain on anyone's parade.... But didn't Sierra have to change the name of Hero's Quest to Quest For Glory due to conflict with the trademark holders of the Hero Quest board game? Namely MB and Games Workshop.

Maybe I'm wrong about the specifics of the name change for Quest For Glory, maybe there wasn't a conflict... But Games Workshop are well known for their trademark zealotry (they did try to trademark the term "space marine"), so just a word of caution regarding the game's title (It sounding similar to their trademark could be enough to get them all frothy at the mouth).

Aside from that sad comment... Nice looking game!  Beer!

Edit: From Wikipedia:
Quote
Although the series was originally titled Hero's Quest, Sierra failed to trademark the name. The Milton Bradley Company successfully trademarked an electronic version of their unrelated joint Games Workshop board game, HeroQuest, which forced Sierra to change the series' title to Quest for Glory. This decision caused all future games in the series (as well as newer releases of Hero's Quest I) to switch over to the new name.

So it seems it wasn't as hostile an scenario as I thought it was. Still, worth keeping in mind.

Interesting question. I don't think it will be an issue as the title is different enough, and the game is not a board game. Further, the game is free, and so it should be obvious that we didn't choose the name in order to make a profit off a well known brand.
