It can be all in the background as world's lore or backstory, or told through the gameplay itself. Dark Souls is arcade gameplay wrapped into an atmospheric setting. It is a gameplay first, story second game. The whole purpose of its setting and style is to evoke more impression than there is to it. When I am talking about a focus on story I am talking about the quality and intention of Deus Ex for example.

I got stuck in the Painted World temporarily. [Didn't have the heart to fight Priscilla.
Back to figuring out The Duke's Archives, I guess.

easiest path to remember rotate left (from the way you come in from the prison) stairs once, go to top go to right stairs, jump down to them, rotate, go to bottom exit is right at bottom of stairs

I don't entirely agree with that, but I do think that people give more credit than is due for the story. While Dark Souls' story is told very well by the environment, there is still no indication that it has a "deep" lore past what has been shown in the game. If anything, it's all speculation by people like EpicNameBro and not necessarily true. However, Dark Souls still does a good job of piquing peoples' imaginations into thinking about the story. We just don't know if there actually was a major story to begin with. I usually don't like very arcadey games and I loved Dark Souls, so I think the story certainly was enough for me.

ENB doesn't make stuff up, and when he speculates he makes a big deal about how what he's about to say is speculation. Most of his videos are technically montages of item descriptions from within the game. All he does is organizes the item descriptions in a coherent manner.

People think of story in games too much in the sense of text and dialogue trees when it's like the most intrusive way to do it.
I need to get back to Dark Souls. Beating Smough & Ornstein was so satisfying I felt like I won the game. Had to put it away for a bit after that, and then work/life got in the way.

I love hearing from these designers. I'd have so many design questions to ask them!

just because this was mentioned a while back itt: I've already talked about quite a few aspects of the game I'm not entirely happy with, but I'd have to say that my greatest regret is the Bed of Chaos. The artists and designers worked extremely hard and came up with some fantastic ideas, but it exposed a real problem in our production method. We have no way to find a common goal and work towards it when things go wrong. It's definitely something I want to correct in the future.

I love JRPGs. Nothing against story through mechanics etc, but I love text too.
