FINALLY!

sorry joseph, your advice didn't really work because i kept being in dum places and couldnt backstab him quick enough after his phase 2 jump slam. what i did instead was learn to parry 1 of his moves, do that a couple times and then finish him off with gun (im playing a hybrid skill/bloodtinge build so my gun does decent dmg). i also burned through a lot of vials to keep my health at max and prevent him 1shotting me.

Thats what I did, I spammed shots with a bloodtinge build and a +10 evelyn. I would get a parry sometimes and even if I didnt he would take a good amount of damage anyway.

oooh those are some nice pointers, joseph. I will definitely try to keep that in mind for other attempts.

the orphan fight really feels like they thought of everything, even heal punishes. like, the one attack where he drags his shrimp behind himself and then does an uppercut caught me mid-heal a number of times in my early goings, and it always seemed to come after an attack you could normally back dash away from.

he's up there with gehrman, allant, and artorias. i probably would like him even more if i got better at phase 2. i hope dks3 has as interesting and varied boss phases as this dlc.

btw, lore stuff (dlc spoilers obv): some people seem to be confused about laurence's skull, but i think i get it. the item description states outright that laurence's human skull "only exists in the nightmare".

we've seen a bunch of times that characters in bloodborne can exist in multiple dreams/alternate realities, even if they die in one reality. micolash is dead in the "real" world, as are lady maria and gehrman for instance. also all those bosses in the chalice dungeons (assuming the chalice dungeons are "canon").

imo laurence's human skull is either the skull of an alternate universe laurence who didn't turn into a beast or it never belonged to a person and is simply a physical manifestation of what laurence wished he had become. the description says he is "always searching for his skull" after all. also skulls have some kind of special significance in the bloodborne universe. apparently they contain some of the knowledge and memories of their former owners (as evidenced by the insight items and laurence's beast skull in the cathedral). so maybe beast laurence is looking for his human skull because he has some sort of hope it will turn him human again?

you did it !!

I totally agree wrt laurance's skull, I think souls nerds try way too hard to rationalize all of their lore into a Coherent Universe -- bb openly states repeatedly that some things are metaphorical and dreamlike.

I dailymotioned my last 15 minutes of Kos Hell to test out ps4share if any of you are curious -- winning fight is at 12:00 but some of the preceding ones are pretty close.

oh dang you fought phase 2 way more aggressively than me. i will analyze this footage  Shocked good to see there's better ways to fight this guy

i like the vague weirdness of laurence searching for his humanity in the form of his skull. in general i like it when souls feels more like a tone piece than straight up plot

Yeah, every time I see someone beat the Orphan of Kos quickly or expertly they stay close to him 90% of the fight and just dodge like crazy towards and around him.

I beat Laurence, Living Failures and Maria. After hearing how easy Living Failures were I was surprised how much they actually challenged me. The difficulty in it for me was trying to parry or backstab and dodge projectiles at the same time. Laurence was challenging but I beat him on the fourth try. Maria though.... that was one of the most heart pounding fights I've ever experienced. It rivals my love for the Artorias battle in Dark Souls 1. It took me about 7-8 tries to beat her, though that may be partly to my roommate purposely trying to mess me up by talking loudly in my ear.

why did you try to parry them? i just comboed them all down and used the big lumenwood flower in the middle of the arena as a shield against the projectiles.

Yeah, I used to flower to stop projectiles too and most did combos. I just mean that I kept trying to do backstabs or parries because it was easy to do to them, but everytime I'd be able to visceral them, I'd have to dodge a projectile.

Bloodbutt sounds painful, but buttborne sounds funny, so the latter.

It's Batman in assless chaps, because that is how real heroes fight crime.
