Die By the Sword was such a badass game, I'm currently getting back into playing it after an eight year break. I am reliving the technical showpiece that was VSIM but I am also reliving the absolute frustration that was combat. If you didn't own a Windows PC in the whirlwind year that was 1998, Die by the Sword was a pretty standard third person adventure game but it stood out because you could use the mouse to control your sword arm (there was joystick and keyboard controls for this too) and by waving it about you could escape the confines of existing combat animations. You could even add more velocity to your blows by turning your body or hopping whilst you were in the process of doing an upwards slash. So now you know.
It worked really well, you could attack anywhere on your opponent and even have his limbs off which you pretty much need to do if you want to stand a chance. The game takes no prisoners, if you escape from a fight with even half a health bar left you should consider yourself skilled or at the least very lucky. You could be convinced that the movement controls are conspiring against you as well as you will need to strafe, jump and run around a lot and since there is no auto targeting you can add turning into that equation. All with one hand which can get you heated when you are surrounded by boar men and there's an ogre who can knock you clean across the room with one hit and they are all attacking you at once.
But boy was it fun when you got going. Being able to jump and slice the head off of an orc then taking his buddy's leg off was such a thrill and quite hilarious as you could create many a Black Knight situation. And then beat things senseless with all of the severed pieces. Then jump into the Arena and be any of the monsters. It's great, knock a kobold off of a platform into a pit full of blades. Let's pester Treyarch for a sequel.
There was also an expansion released, named Limb From Limb which added a new quest, some new monsters and lots of fun things for the Arena like a selection of weapons for certain characters and an ogre hockey mode where teams of two ogres got to club around a kobold and each other. Beats inventing your own fun any day of the week.

I loved that game when it first came out. I lost my discs years ago and I kinda miss the mouse-slashing action.

It is? Awesome. I've bought it a couple of times, but I think both my CDs are long gone :|

It's also on Gametap too, but that's a butchered version without any blood, limb staining or dismemberment. Fail!!!

How could it be a "butchered" version without any of that?!

They did it so they can rate the game a "GT-13+". At the time there was no M-rated games on Gametap at that point. Not only that, but the multiplayer was also hacked out - sure the menus are in there but it's absolutely non-functional. Also what's bad is that you are forced to play in software mode, can't use Direct3D/Glide/SGL api

I think HandCraftedRadio's hilarious joke was about how butchering often involves like blood and dismemberment and fighting things while wielding dismembered limbs like they're weapons (I think I'm not really a butcherer.).
It's also bad that Gametap won't let you pay for anything if you live somewhere or something.

I love Die by the Sword. The guttural grunts and screams your character makes as he's prancing around, lopping off people's heads are HEE-LARIOUS!
Seriously, I could go for a sequel to this game!

I hear there is a glovepie (Wiimote) mod for the game. I really like to see how that would work.

Does someone have a tip on how to get Dbts working on WinXP. I downloaded a demo from fileplanet which wants me to install DirectX5 (?).

Try downloading 3D-Analyze and see if you can get it working.
