I have dabbled in game making for years, ever since me and my brother bought the Games Factory online back in 1999 or so, but lately we have been doing it more and me being the more artistic of the 2 of us am the graphics guy.  And I just discovered this great forum.

So I am wondering, is there a way that any of you more experienced pixel art folks know of to apply the 2×SaI or Super Eagle filter looks (y'know, the ones often used in emulators) to my pixel art? Like a Photoshop add-on or something?

http://bob.allegronetwork.com/2xsai/2xsai.zip

The source is GPL though, so if it bothers you, get some programmer to read the code and write down the algorithm then program it yourself.

The zip file also includes a command-line convert utility if you don't want to apply the filter from inside a program.

Oh god. Please make it optional, I hate smoothing filters and I'm sure many others will agree.

More generic information regarding these filters and their algorithms:

Some of them are really extremely simple to implement.

I would agree that the original nonfiltered look is better on it's native resolution and in it's original output type, but if you are playing on a monitor with 4 times the normal resolution, it just doesn't look good.

well that actually looks really good in the water and the rocks excluding the few flowers on them.

Opinion. Some of us prefer the true pixels. I use scanline filters myself.

It is opinion, but I still want to have access to it, when I want it.

I like the style. It's different, and true pixel art sure does suit that better, but I do love the variety. Also, those cliffs/rocks/water are to die for.

When blockiness just doesn't sit with me, I use filters such as HQ2xS. Everything looks so much smoother.

Especially text.
