The shitty color scheme was exploited waaaaaaay after quake was lkargely ignored by devs and causal gamers.

Quake was not ignored by developers, Quake was what started the entire 3d FPS genre, not to mention the developers who used the engine for their own work. Also 'Casual Gamers' as a market did not exist until early 2000's.

Quake is one of my favorite PC games of all time.
I am kinda disappointed with the direction the series has gone in, with the whole "Strogg" thing, but the later ones (with the exception of 4) are really good.

My wording kind of contradicted my intended message. argh,

My point was that by the time the shitty color scheme you speak of became the norm, Quake 1 was no longer relevant as a source of inspiration/ripoff. Hell, not even as an engine.

My heart gushes with love for this game. I grew up with it and I still play it to this day.

Also, it still has a small community of mappers, modders and players across various websites. See http://www.quakeone.com/navigator/ for fairly comprehensive links.
The community online expo, QExpo has it's next date set for August 8th.

If you haven't already, check out Nehahra; the epic Quake mod with it's own feature-length machinima.
