The idea is great, it just needs more work.
First, maximizing the window on a widescreen produces a stretching effect. As most people now seem to have wide screens, it would make sense to at least use some black space in the borders to keep the aspect ratio consistent.
I didn't like the explosions, they lasted for too long while obscuring a considerable area. I got killed multiple times because I got distracted by explosions. Main screen and user interface could also use some work.
I think you need to do two separate explosions. One for bullet impacts and one for exploding enemies.

I really liked the music and this game really needs some sound effects.

Other things:
-intro should be skippable
-high score doesn't get saved.

Some of the ui/visual elements need to be clarified. The background is nice but probably could be less saturated or lighter to the players and enemies pop out more. At first I wasn't sure if the gold? were bullets or not and so I was also dodging them. I guess maybe because the shape sort of looks like a missile and could probably be clarified a bit.

Also sound effects would probably help a lot in terms of feedback (when an enemy is destroyed, when the player is hit, etc).
