I get that one too, and I haven't been able to figure out how to tell YouTube to tell him to fuck off. If a recommendation shows up on the front page, there's a way to mark it as "not interested", and one of the options implies it'll block the channel from recommending things in the future...but unless it happens to show up there, I don't know another way to make it go away.

The "not interested" button is hidden in the one of those "more stuff" buttons, the ones that are like 3 grey sqaures on top of each other

its funny how there is this entire cottage industry of anita sarkeesian reBUTTal videos and whenever you watch anything by her, you instantly have them showing up in your reccomendations.

if you ever watch any of these videos it makes u really appreciate how concise anita is because most of them are unedited rambles by people under the false impression that their opinions are Really Original And Important

It is indeed a moldy pizza on top of a cut-off Emmy award with a cape.

I vaguely recall briefly watching one of The Amazing Atheist's videos and then I was like
five seconds in
<Me> YA KNOW WHAT I'm fucking rich
and turned the video off

Anyway I like that Smash screen for some reason. Like I know it's a coincidentally /inopportune/ screenshot of fighting moves, but there's this tenderness to it and it looks like some happy, loving brojobs are about to happen*.

Also I used to hang around this gay brony community and it's like, 1. they hated Sarkeesian. 2. They really hated women in general and I'm pretty sure they were all gay just /because/ they hated women. 3. they universally had this fetish for like, married straight dudes cheating on their wives with other dudes for the sake of hurting their wives emotionally?Huh? it's like cool i'm just trying to score some normal furry porn between consenting adult male horse people that aren't trying to hurt anyone and/or Steam buddies thanks for dragging me into your weird misogynistic gay power fantasy fuckmiasma.

* I was gonna say "go down" but that's too obvious.

Spider man was in a similar pose to Spider woman that one time an erotic artist did a cover art for a comic book therefore sexism doesn't exist.

http://all-things-andy-gavin.com/2011/02/02/making-crash-bandicoot-part-1/

Quote
Sensing opportunity, we turned to our own favorite genre, the character platform action game (CAG for short).
[...]
We called it the “Sonic’s Ass” game. And it was born from the question: what would a 3D CAG be like? Well, we thought, you’d spend a lot of time looking at “Sonic’s Ass.” Aside from the difficulties of identifying with a character only viewed in posterior, it seemed cool.
[...]
The “Sonic’s ass” nomenclature was more than a casual reference to the blue mascot turned 90 degrees into the screen.  It defined the key problem in moving a 2d game into the third dimension:  You would always be looking at the characters ass.  This might play well (it had never been tried) but it certainly would not be the best way to present a character.

I'd like to point out that being marsupials, Crash's genitalia were probably way more interesting than his ass.

They shoulda had him nude moonwalk the whole game.

I find it amusing she uses an NPC from Kane & Lynch as an example, considering that later on in that very same game, the two main characters are stripped completely naked and stay that way for an entire level. They don't even get pixels over their butts the way her example did.

And the idea of "strategically" hiding men's butts is just stupid and grasping for straws. Everything about these characters, male or female are designed around portraying their character. Aiden's trenchcoat isn't there to hide his butt from the camera, it's to hide his body from the public; it's to keep him concealed. And Batman's cape is there for gliding, for a menacing silhouette, and because Batman has always worn a cape.

But I'm just saying this as someone who believes personal expression takes priority over percieved aggressions, and that ideas like these
A useful thing to have would be a panel of feminists who could tear apart character designs while they are still in development, so that by the time they 'hit the shelves' they are feminist approved and certified sexism free
Or better, have feminists educate character designers while they're still in college!

...but for already existing studios that would be the best solution yeah.
come dangerously close to Orwellian censorship.

It does seem kind of silly, and I think this video could have made a stronger point if it was just "look at how often female butts are emphasized while male butts aren't" without going so far as to say "male butts are very deliberately covered and obscured". It seems meant as a lighthearted video overall though, and it's not always immediately obvious which parts are joking because of the deadpan delivery. That said, the "Sonic's ass" quote above provides an interesting anecdote where not wanting to look at a male butt was actually a consideration by a development team. It's only one example, but it's still interesting.

Calling this sort of character design a perceived aggression might be taking it a bit far. I interpret these videos as a means to point out patterns that might be missed by the casual observer, and let them draw their own conclusions.

Mittens's quote sounds like obvious hyperbole to me, but ProgramGamer's suggestion of feminist education is perfectly reasonable. This is an issue of ignorance more than overt malice. Before reading and participating in feminism discussions on tigsource and other places, I had no idea about a lot of the problems women face in the game industry and culture in general - the things that were happening were totally invisible to me because I wasn't a target and I didn't know how to look for them as an observer. Feminist education isn't indoctrination; it merely gives you the tools to see things from another perspective so you can understand what might accidentally make someone's life worse through ignorance.

Thats kind of the point though, isn't it?

Males tend to have a fleshed out design based around portraying their character. As you pointed out, each of those items of clothing serves a purpose and helps define the characters personality and abilities.

But you very rarely see the same care of design put into female characters, instead they're expected to head into battle with metal bikinis and explore ancient tombs in Nepal whilst wearing cargo hot pants. How does that make any sense in the context of their characters.

The "point" was that Anita's video seemed to suggest an ulterior plot by the video game industry to only show female butts and keep men fully concealed at all times. The fact of the matter is, though, that it's laziness. It's all laziness, both for men and women. The focus on designing female characters tends to be "make her hot", and the focus on male characters is "make him cool".

I like using Bayonetta as an example here, as a character whose design is based entirely on personality. She's meant to be a sex-positive and body-conscious character, who's aware of, and flaunts, both her strength and her sex appeal. She's designed to be oversexualized because that's her character; her character designer explicitly made her to be a female power fantasy. But most people look at her, and they only look skin deep, and declare her to be an offensive design without looking into the context.

And it's these people, in turn, who grow up to be the new game and character designers. Aiden's design likely did not go further than "trench coats are cool and mysterious", much like the various Assassins. Cole from inFamous has a similar situation. Pretty much the entire modern Playstation market, more or less.

I dunno, maybe I'd be more open to hearing her side if it wasn't the same side that regularly calls opponents bigoted and sexist to shut them down.
