There are going to be issues getting animals to behave enough like humans we acknowledge they're intelligent. Genetic memory, child rearing, physical specialization all incorporate to create the whole.

There are patterns in the way humans think that will lead to conflicts.

scenario: The animals are empowered through direct means.  It's pretty much as it is right now.  They'll never be self-sustaining if humans have to work for them.

scenario: The animals integrated directly into the wild near human society. Self-sustaining, and visible to the majority, they'd be seen as they already are.  If the animals are taxed for human work they'd basically be slaves though. The next crucial anthro-alteration would be ambition, and then they'd want to improve themselves.

scenario: The animals are separate. Self-sustaining, it wouldn't take long before a conflict erupted because the animals could be ambitious, they could be dangerous. If they're observed directly, eg through taxes, it would take longer for a conflict.  In order for animals to develop human-like crime they would need to be ambitious. Assuming they progress and multiply without internal conflict, they'd have to agree to the same rules humans follow like sparing endangered species, limiting their reproduction, etc, so the humans aren't jealous. Finally, they might be able to innovate in ways humans don't, because they have different desires and specialization, thus different ideals (eg birds fly, they feel safer in nests, they'd probably focus on spires and find ways to survive crashing).

This is speculation of course, you could picture animals being successful, innovative, or develop human-like ambition in any scenario. There's also the likelihood animals with less innate social specialization would say things that humans refuse to tolerate and vice-versa whales would be annoyed at humans for being socially incompetent. Those things would also come into play, altering our perception of when someone is smart, so it's the same for animals.

What if the animals only act uplifted when they're around humans, then they go back to behaving normally, with no traces of evidence?

I think behavior won't just change over night nor completely but I think if they were given human intelligence, mainly through way of human genes and taught by humans that it would simply be easier to adapt to a human's style of interaction and socialization. If you're species just became self-aware and smart, but didn't know how to do certain things (as in you need to learn them)it would be easier to observe and mimic.

I think they'd try to copy humans at first but eventually go a different path at some point. Like different cultures but perhaps a little more extreme.
