OK. RESULTS TIME.
here were all the entries:
Yoshimitsu - Fire In The Bottomless Pit http://soundcloud.com/ronin-narasu/fire-in-the-bottomless-pitNice emotional track. I felt the potential for varied sounds using effects could have gone even further but it was a nice coherent track. Production quality wasn't always on top form in this one as you stated when submitting it.
Moritz - Ditty on E-Bass http://soundcloud.com/mpgk/ditty-on-e-bassReally creative use of the electric bass and it really suits the composition as well. The textures you make out of some of the bass chords are really lovely and remind me of sigur ros.
Pgil - Borcolispirits http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3125554/PrivateMusic/brocoilispirits.mp3Borcolispirits/brocolispirits? I was really impressed by the variety of sounds you got out of the flute sample... although maybe i'm easily impressed as you said: "(I kind of feel like it's too easy to make a short, pitched sample sound like whatever I want, what with all the effects that are available... I might try something with my guitar later)" this is in part a failure of the task but i feel that the piece doesn't feel like an evolution/variation on different sounds. It sounds like loads of completely different sounds and it's impressive that it's all come from the flute sample but i didn't get the impression as with others that these varied sounds were directly connected in some way. I enjoyed the piece but didn't feel like it went anywhere as the focus was more on the varied sounds created, which i applaud you for.
Tipp - distortion|distortion/distortion
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28713347/sa%20d%20song.mp3This was a pretty cool piece. I'll ignore the answerphone stuff and concentrate on the chime sample. You've got lots of nice tense layers of glitchy chime building up which I'm digging. The answerphone message sets a really melancholic atmosphere which i feel kind of carries the piece quite a bit so considering the piece without it is kinda difficult. I like it buuut if it didn't include the answerphone message (which i can't include in this challenge) perhaps the piece would have taken a different turn and the chime samples would have had to hold their own. Nethertheless it was a really nice emotive piece.
XiChiST - untitled
http://www.mediafire.com/?42ta6rr8f51188qOK, white noise solo! I like how you've used a spectral gate/hard EQing to create a sense of pitch within the white noise but i feel that that could have been used towards more harmonic/melodic ends as right now it seems like more of an effect. You're also playing around with nice percussive uses for the white noise but at the moment i feel that this as a piece seems more like a series of experiments. I would have loved to hear the more pitched white noise and the percussive stuff come together.
Swordofkings128 - junya nanako is my hero
http://tindeck.com/listen/mplkFirst of all, this is the music I just love. The harmony/rhythm/character of this piece is right up my street. With regards to the challenge, I suppose I was expecting more creative and varied uses of the instrument (this is also the case for slinwyeg's entry). I felt as though this didn't explore the potential of the piano as an instrument. Outside of the challenge though, i love it!
JudahRoydes - Discord In Love
http://soundcloud.com/judahroydes/discord-in-loveReminds me of something from the death note soundtrack - there are a lot of electric guitar tracks there. I like this, I wonder how you got the kick and click sounds from the guitar! It's a very nice piece that makes good use of the guitar. Could even be taken further with regards to effects. Not sure about the ending though!
KomradeJack - Daisun Interface//Terminal 3n
http://soundcloud.com/jackmenhorn/daisun-interface-tract-1Nice work. You've got some almost choral textures going on with the trail of some of the piano notes in contrast to the hard cut splicing which makes this piece very tense and effective. The composition was very meditative but for me I felt it bordered on being a little directionless in places. But I was very impressed by some of the really atmospheric textures you made with these piano samples.
BubblePipeMedia - Watching the trees grow quickly
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19391959/watchingthetreesgrowquickly.mp3Nice work, especially for something quickly thrown together. Some really deep atmospheric textures going on (something i think this challenge has encouraged)... I think because of the piece's improvisatory nature it lacks much coherence/structure and feels like more of an exploration than a composition with makes use of the things you've found. But I guess you'd come to expect this feedback as you said this was a rush job improvisation thing. Anyway, you got some really nice sounds out of it!
Slinwyeg - Hana Blume
http://www.nilsgey.de/uploads/Nils_Gey_-_Hana_Blume_-_Piano_Solo.mp3Like swordofkings, I don't want to mark you down for being really traditional with this but i think what i was really looking for was a more varied approach in terms of performance techniques and production of one instrument. I appreciate the score and all of the links you sent me. This was a nice piano ballad with a hint of uematsu (also in the title). As much as I like this i don't feel like I can appreciate it in the context of the challenge as much as some of the other more experimental entries.
THE WINNER IS: MORTIZPGKATZ! Although there were a few pitfalls in the challenge, i felt moritz's bass ditty got the balance between experimentation and solid composition down. Thanks everyone for the inspiring entries, may there be many more challeneges!
