You're focussing too much on the method of transmission, when what's relevant is the fact that it's transmitted. If the meme relates to a physical artifact, then you can state unequivocally that the artifact itself is not transmitted. No, but it is duplicated (possibly slights changed in the process) by photographs, replicas, descriptions, all of these things. It is reproduced by the million. Hence, the meme itself is purely psychological.
To reiterate what I've said before, your usage of the word 'meme', while maybe running parallel to the common one, is very much different in its exclusion of physical objects. The essential quality of a meme is that it's a replicating neural pattern in the same sense that a gene is a self-replicating chemical one - that's how Dawkins defined it in The Selfish Gene - and so fundamentally a meme is not an object. Images are produced by the million because the memes which they support are successful, but the objects themselves are not memes, they are merely a mechanism of the meme to distribute. It may be that it's common practice to refer to a thing as a meme when in fact it's merely a thing distributed by a meme, but the actual thing which behaves in a memetic fashion is psychological. |

It seems that we, in any given situation, would be in agreement as to whether there was something memetic going on or not, but that we would possibly disagree as to what would constitute the meme. If this be so then, owing to the wikipedia-acknowledged lack of consesus as to what exactly a meme is (even, as we've shown with our respective RD references, he didn't have it pinned down to definitely himself), then I would like to reiterate my support for a call of moot.
