Hey, I need to do some simple lowpoly polygonal modeling for a project I'm working on.  I took a basic class in Maya a few years ago, but I'm looking to use Blender for models in this game.

Do you guys know of any good tutorials for getting started as a beginner?

<3's.

The Essential Blender book is available free at http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:Books/Essential_Blender. The first four chapters are a pretty good place to get familiar with the interface and low-poly modeling.

I suggest trying Wings3D for modelling. It's easier to get a hang of I think.

- wings3d is pretty simple to get the hang of, so.

pity it doesn't do uv-mapping, but I can cope (I use blender to add textures to models after making them).

AFAIK Blender is still a more capable texture tool, but I haven't been doing UVs for my current models so I haven't really looked. Someday I'll start...

I used wings3d to do uv mapping a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised; I remember it not really working a long time ago, but now it seems to work just fine and be relatively straightforward to use Smiley

Wings still doesn't do animation stuff though AFAIK.

I'll look into Wings3d, but I may end up writing a light model format and exporter (probably just tacking some things onto the .OBJ format), which is why I'm thinking of Blender.

This is the first thing that came to my mind as well. Wings 3D's mesh modeller is quite a bit easier and more capable. Simply export to OBJ and re import to Blender when you're ready to do more. Fost from Moodpod uses Wings 3D quite extensively for their 3D.

As for learning it, i'd say just play around for a few hours. The interface is quite intuitive.

i have this tutorial right after using blender

Result:

Yep i have gone wild just after understanding the command + Blender is awesome for UV (didn't see that part of the tutorial yet, but was able to do something correct!)

Jonathan Williamson from BlenderCookie.com has neat tutorials, but they're not exactly ultra-beginner ones.
