Chris, that is super awesome of you to do!
If I manage to get my game done I'll be looking into Player.IO for my online stuff. This is a great offer and helps motivate me to pull up the ol' proverbial pants and get this done.

Well huh. This is about the last thing I would expect me to have registered an account for, what with having no experience with net code and a general fear of trying to learn it... but then I came up with a really nifty play-by-e-mail concept that I might try to get made in time for the contest if I can hammer out the details in time.
I'm assuming that sort of thing would still qualify even if it's not simultaneous multiplayer, so long as it's still competitive?

Yep. Anything goes as long as it is related to the theme "versus" :D Goodluck!

So far we have 22 takers on the Player.IO offer, so we thought it was appropriate to update our Multiplayer Documentation to let you all get started quicker. Enjoy!

Would a game similar to Four Swords Adventures qualify? What I mean is, the basic gameplay is cooperative, but overall, each player is competing for higher scores.

Competition should be the focus of your game. You can have cooperation on top of that, but in your case I'd recommend putting extra focus on the score competition between players.

If it works like Munchkin, where you're "cooperating", but really just trying to dick each-other over to win, that could work. Some of the best competitive games are the ones where everyone loses if they don't cooperate at all, but there can only be one winner. You know, the kind of game that ruins friendships.

If even 10% of the game threads already posted get finished, this will be my favorite competition so far. Because there are awesome and crazy ideas around. Thanks Derek!
