Workshops would be amazing and would definitely interest me. Instead of just people talking about how to manage an indie business, things like animation or pixel art or engine programming would be awesome.
THIS personally i imagine something like that to look like a demoparty more than a GDC, it would fit better the indie scene, so a big YES for workshops and showcases For the businness part, that's important too, we should plan a section to meet publishers and such a bit like Game Connection does. Like with online profiles for who's going to be at the event and the possibility to take dates with them during the weeks before it, using an online invites system. That was one of the coolest thing of the Game Connection If we're doing something of this scale, it would be best to give ourselves a good amount of time to devise and organise it. Depending on what sort of thing is decided upon, it might be sensible to aim either for late 2009 or even for 2010.
and that. When it was for the UK jam i was unable to plan something because my fulltime job and the tons of deadlines i had, but with more space to organize my time i (and i bet a lot of people) could manage to have a trip somewhere without much pain, flights are also a lot cheaper when planned months before...

this is awesome and needs to happen somehow. i'm willing to donate services and etc. to make it work.
That barcamp format would be ideal, not only because it seems geared towards folks with limited resources but it also compliments the spirit of indie game development in general.

Come to a consensus on location. Ideally somewhere with a number of people in the area. Phoenix comes to mind. Then whoever is there needs to find a venue. I'm not sure Flashbang is big enough... perhaps a bigger game studio/publisher in the area?
It'd be relatively easy to find a place here in the SF area, we're used to doing these sort of things. Plus I have lots of connections...

If Jeff wants to get it started, SF makes sense.

I can't say it's close or anything, but I'd be up for SF. Seems like a nice place to have an excuse to go too.

I'm thinking 4 days: first 2 days BarCamp conference style, 2 days JAMMING. Could probably do 5 days if we wanted.
Should the name be TIGScon? TIGconf?

I guess it's not an international dealio any more, then? The West Coast is even more west of Europe than the East Coast.

Duuuude, check actual flight costs ... flights are pretty cheap these days. ALSO: you wouldn't have to worry about conference pass costs. Maybe just hotel, but we might be able to figure out cheaper group lodging (and potentially even have people stay at the venue, but would prefer not)

Ah, cool. Actually, I have no right to complain anyway, since I won't be able to afford anything like this this year - I'm already flying around various places this summer.
The community center project looks really impressive, by the way.

I still think we need some type of game gathering on the east coast -- the west coast seems to get everything (the gdc for instance). NYC would be great for me. Plus people from Europe don't have to fly as far.

Looks too much like TIGScone. You're not English enough to pull that off.

I thought TIGConf wasn't that bad; there are much worse options, and I can't seem to think of a better one. Oh, and on a different note, why is the official annual Jam in September, when anyone who's a student is basically unable to go? I mean, there are 4 months of the year where I (and any other student people here) could use it as an excuse to fly to Phoenix for a mini-holiday. Instead, it has to join the list of "cool but I'm at school" events, like GDC and MIGS/GAMMA.
