Hiya

I'm a Computer Innovation (basically computing with a focus on research) undergraduate going into my second year. Over the summer I've been working with a masters student in the field of 'physical computing'. So we've been messing around with an Arduino for example. And I really like the idea of forming my second year project (which obviously has to have a focus on research) in the area of physical computing.

So I really like the idea of creating a simple game with some sort of alternative tangible (hands on) interface. May be you could point me in the direction of some existing projects that could be inspirational or suggest what kind of skills I might start building up. Or if anyone has an idea how I could tie this into research -- the more specific the better -- I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure how I first found this, but it is something that's pretty hard to forget about. Take a look:

Also, the stuff over at http://wiki.nuigroup.com/Main_Page might be worth a look.

I built a pong controller using my arduino, but that's probably not what you're looking for.

I have two suggestions:
1) Build a small 8-bit hand-held console using a at-mega, low-res screens (I can provide some links to some if you want) and some distance sensors, or other alternative sensors. Then put some simple games, like shmups or tetris on it.

2) Look at monomes, you could probably build something along these lines?

yesterday a friend of mine showed me this : http://www.pranavmistry.com/projects/sixthsense/#VIDEOS , very inspirational physical computing silliness.
After that i showed him this back :

and http://www.jeremybailey.net/bio.html, "hilarious parodies of new media vocabularies ".
Because most of that physical/newest computer stuff is just technical fetisjism, nothing usefull unless your a manager, art-director of a sf serie, or someone who tries to find investors or well offcourse the group of people having fun building it...
