Joe looks stupid. There's no cowboys with striped ties, it should be a bolo tie if any. And his face looks dumb but the rest of the body doesn't match. But I'm sure you can easily refine him.

I'll change the tie, I wasn't sure about it. But his face was supposed to look dumb, he is an assistant of the sheriff. Thanks for the interest Smiley

more info/art soon

gotta play some LoL

I'd recommend that if you're going to use sketchy lines you also use "sketchy" coloring (gradients don't tend to play nicely with sketchy lines). An easy way to achieve this is to shift the base colors a bit in patches so that you get this nice variety of subtle color variations.

It's quick and dirty, but hopefully you get the idea.

The other thing I'd recommend is to tone down the background colors a bit so that it appears there is some distance between the character and the buildings and so that the colors don't clash or blend. A quick and dirty way to do this is just to take the color of the sky and fill a layer above the background with it and then tone down the opacity.

Curiously, I thought that instead of Joe the sidekick would be named Mansel. O_o

Thanks, is any of these better?

I made the background so the characters will stand out more, like you said.

@eyeliner: first time I hear this name lol
but doesn't fit to that character IMO, I'm still thinking between Jerry and Joe.

BTW: I already have a rough vision of the plot in the game with 3 possible endings. Clint is the main character.

I like the right most the best because of the bold outlines, but it's overkill for the more detailed parts of the character.

I'm going to have to agree with Moi here.

Ideally you'd study color theory and properly learn color and lighting but that is a pretty big hurdle to leap when you've already got so many to jump to make this game, so that is why I suggested the splotching which will at least give you some color variation and break up the flatness. The problem with just applying filters is that they aren't changing that feeling of flatness in any way. I do like the darker and bolder outlines, though.
