GClip is probably the most useful freeware vst I've found.

Synth1
http://www.geocities.jp/daichi1969/synmanu/readmeeng.html

I use Synth1 for everything. It's based off of the Clavia Nord Lead 2. It is the best VST!!!

TAL Line
TAL-U-No-62 - http://www.kunz.corrupt.ch/?Products:VST_TAL-U-No-62
TAL-Elek7ro - http://www.kunz.corrupt.ch/?Products:VST_TAL-Elek7ro
TAL NoiseMaker - http://www.kunz.corrupt.ch/?Products:VST_TAL-NoiseMaker

I use all the TAL VSTs but especially TAL-U-No-62, Elek7ro and NoiseMaker. They're super high quality and are great for getting that 80s sound.

Very powerful bass VST, I use it for almost my basses.

Instruments:

Drumatic 3 - Best free drum synth I've found. Can do simple 808-style sounds, but you have lots of control over the envelopes and filters, so you can do some pretty crazy stuff too.

DSK Virtuoso - Sample-based synth that lets you combine up to 6 acoustic instruments sounds.

Mr. Ray, Organized Trio - Electric organ and piano simulation.

Effects:

Bionic Delay - Virtual tape delay.  Turn the feedback up for some dub-style squealchy sounds.

Retro Delay - A more general-purpose delay. Still has lots of settings to tweak, like an lfo that affects filters and playback speed, saturation, and reverb.

EDIT: Yeah, oatmeal is the best! It's like the sfxr of vstis... You can just press "randomize" and you always get something cool. The gui always put me off, but the latest version comes with a bunch of skins. I use gj-maple.

My brother programmed this synth VSTi called "Oatmeal" a few years ago. It's very very flexible and has a neat randomize button that also comes up with funny preset names like "Amazing Mechagod", "Dismembered by the Fly" or "Buddha vs. Murdertree". Smiley

Here's my "comprehensive list":

LePou
Le456: ENGL Powerball Simulation, with all channels and modes.
HyBrit:A two channel amp. One channel is a Marshall Plexi 100 Super Lead and the other is a Marshall JCM 800.
SoloC Head:One of my favorites, it simulates a Soldano SLO 100 Head with all it's channels and modes.
LeCTO:Simulates the two dirty channels of a 3-channel Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier.
LeXTACAlso, one of my favorites, it simulates a Bogner Ecstasy head.
LeCab 2:Since none of these amps come with speaker simulation, LePou makes a free plugin you can use to load your own cabinet impulses (more on that below).

Variety of Sound

FerricTDS: Tape saturation and dynamics.
NastyDLA: Tape delay and chorus.

Download

E-phonic
Retro Delay:Variable tape delay simulator. One of the few that can generate 'sound on sound delay' without regeneration. Here's a example(using LePou LeXTAC and LeCab as amp):

0ther ones

Camel Audio Alchemy Player:
Free version of Camel's excellent Alchemy Soft Synth. Also comes with it's own presets and a libary.
Yellow Tools Independence Free: Free version of Yello Tools' Independence Player. Comes with 2 Gb worth of sounds.

Well, I could add many more plugins in here. But I could remember only these.

I know there's one for the Soviet synth, Polivoks, and there's one for the Pro One, but I don't know what that's called.
